Even as barriers to equality fall, gay and lesbian teens report they still struggle with harassment and identity issues more than their straight peers do. It isn’t easy growing up gay in America despite the nation’s increasing acceptance of same sex marriage and other issues of gay quality. Lesbian and gay teens across the U.S. are less likely to be happy, more likely to report harassment and more inclined to experiment with drugs and alcohol then the nation’s straight teens according to a new nationwide survey of more than 10,000 gay and lesbian young people. Then of all gay and lesbian teens are verbally harassed/called names at school. Stark pictures of the challenges of growing up gay in this country more than twice as many gay (52%) as non gay (22%) respondents said they had experimented with drugs/alcohol. The surveys show these are young people and they worry about which hall they can walk down at school, which table they have to avoid in the lunch too, what happens at church on study and whether they need to hide their identity from their family. But the survey also shows that many gay teens find safe havens among their peers, on the internet and not in their schools.

This School year is finally over and there have been many types of changes this year. There were two different academies. There were no more deans. Everything was stricter. All of the schedules changed. Everything changed but after all it turned out to be a pretty good year. Maybe they did go a little too far with the uniform policy and stuff.
They even created a new class which was journalism. Even though there were some problems with the teacher at the end if you actually notice it, it turned out to be a pretty good year in that class. We had our own newspaper every month. Even the eighth graders got there field trip to six flags and I’m pretty sure they had lots of fun. After all I bet that some of the eighth graders are going to be sad that they are leaving Virgil maybe some are going to be happy who knows. But to me it was a pretty good year I guess.

Obama's Ohio speech to focus on who has the best plan for economy
WASHINGTON -- Over the past few years President Obama has developed a reliable strategy for moments when the chips are down, and it usually starts the same way: roll out a big speech. On Thursday, the big speech aims to crystallize the debate between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney over the economy. According to the campaign, Obama will say the coming election offers the American people a chance to "break the stalemate between two fundamentally different visions of how to grow the economy, create middle-class jobs, and pay down the debt."Obama will continue to push for his economic vision based on growth from the middle class, a plan that focused on education, energy, innovation, infrastructure, "and a tax code that creates American jobs and pays down our debt in a way that's balanced."The event in Cleveland, the heart of swing country, comes as part of a summer plan to slowly ratchet up the campaign, advisers to the president say. Obama never wanted a hard pivot to full-on candidate mode.
But the address was crafted in the days since the president’s economic message melted under his declaration that the private sector is “doing fine.” His speech-writing team knows the remarks will be judged in that context. In laying out the broad outlines, the president said he wanted to focus on the choice voters will have before them this fall in terms of the candidates’ economic views. For months now, Obama has been trying to explain just that. That’s why he has been talking about the disastrous economy he inherited and the Republican economic philosophy he blames for that state of affairs. This time, the president is under pressure to make that message stick

Malaysian Mother Abused Her Helpless 10 Month Old Baby

Ira is considered a sick and psycho mother. In May 29 2011, Ira got caught kicking, pinching, and slapping her baby. While continuing to abuse her baby, two people are video taping her and one of them is begging for her to stop. Most of the people are mad at the two people who took the video because instead of stopping her they just watched her abusing her baby. Although they just watched Ira abusing her baby at-least they took a video for evidence and people around the world saw what she have been doing to her poor baby.
Ira got arrested at the same date when she got caught on the video. Ira is going to spend 18 months on prison at Peta ling, Jaya. People think she deserves forever in prison because of what she did but I just hope she learned from her lesson. When the video was put up World wide, the police have received 300 complaints and comments from the public. The video has been released more than 20,000 in Face book. In my own opinion I think people like Ira don’t deserve to be a parent. If they are sick and tired of their babies they should just put them in the Welfare Center so that way their babies would be safer. Ira’s baby is now place in Foster family.

NATO summit protest Yeho Lee Period 3
5/23/12
NATO leaders had a summit meeting in Chicago to discuss from financial trouble in Greece to How to get the troops out of Afghanistan but outside the meeting there were
protestors who are fed up on their government
fighting costly and bloody wars overseas instead
of helping their nations troubling economy but
despite the protest, news network has ignored or give a little coverage of the protest.
The protesting occurred before the summit when President Obama announced that they would be having a summit meeting in Chicago, which will begin from May 20- 21, so in response anti war protestors, Occupy Movement and veterans of who came home from Iraq and Afghanistan to protest against NATO’s “costly and deadly wars”. But despite it is considered as a peaceful protest which is meant in the First Amendment that
people have the freedom to assemble and have the freedom of speech but the Chicago Police Department has spend one million dollars on police equipment such as military equipped riot armor and a long range acoustic device, a soundwave type weapon that can cause permanent ear damage to protestors.
Other unconstitutional incident is that protestors were arrested by the police for protesting and other police brutality is that officers hit protestors with their bikes, beaten with batons which cause protestors to either lose a teeth or suffering from terrible injuries.
This protest reminds of an incident back in 1968 when hundred thousands of anti-Vietnam war protestors were brutality beaten by police, which was the bloodiest “police riot” in the U.S. and still occurring today and these incidents should be learned in order to prevent another dangerous riot ever occurring.

A Star has been ripped apart by a Giant black hole
By: Prottasha Khan
Back when single-celled creatures lived on Earth, a gargantuan black hole went to the center of a separate galaxy and dismantled a star. The star was so close that it is ripped apart by the gravitational force of the black hole. Astronomers said sometimes black holes make themselves visible in the telescope, but sometimes it is invisible. About 76 days after the star was ripped apart, the black hole began devouring its remains and taking at least a year to finish off the star. The scientists calculated that the black hole's mass was 3 million times greater than that of the sun, which itself has four times the mass of the destroyed star.
Most black holes normally lie dormant and invisible for starved of fuel. After the star was ripped apart, the black hole send a jet of particles straight out in the space by its intense magnetic field. When the star was ripping apart, the blast of radiation was so bright and powerful that the scientists were sure that could only be coming from a star being sucked up by a black hole. Scientists also discovered that the star was made up of mainly of helium and they found out that from long ago the black hole exposed the star’s outmost hydrogen layers. In addition, when this process was happening, there were bright flashes on the sky and then they fade away.
Scientists had been predicting this event for many years, but for the first time they got an evidence to prove it. On Wednesday, astronomers reported that they watched the entire process unfold over a period of 15 months starting in 2010, for the first time such an event had been observed in great detail from start to finish. Scientists said luckily the NASA telescope was open to capture the picture or else they couldn’t observe the process.

Oil spills fter Barge Collision On River Near New Orleans
By: Jimena Escammila
The oil barge suffered a 10-by-5-foot gash at its waterline.
As of 7:30 a.m. CST, it had been pushed up on a riverbank and was no longer
leaking. The barge was carrying sweet crude oil, of which Louisiana is the
nation's No. 1 producer, according to an economic study produced last year for
the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Assn. An amount of oil spilled in the
Mississippi River without being determined. This happened on Friday morning
close to New Orleans after an oil barge collided with another vessel. The oil
barge was being moved along the river by the towing vessel Clarence W. Settoon
when the collision with another towing vessel occurred. That vessel, the
Alygar, was pushing a crane barge.
"One of our priorities is to facilitate the safe continuation of
commercial traffic," Gautier said in a news release.
The Coast Guard on Friday partially reopened a five-mile stretch of the Mississippi River upriver from New Orleans after oil spilled from a barge following an early morning collision. Capt. Pete Gautier, the Coast Guard's captain of the port, said southbound traffic on the river could move through the affected area until 6 p.m. Then, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday, northbound traffic will be allowed to transit the area. "Safety is paramount, and the unified command is working to minimize the impact this spill has on people, the environment and commerce.A portion of the Mississippi was closed Friday morning after two barges collided causing an oil spill about 50 miles upriver from New Orleans. A section of the lower Mississippi River near LaPlace was closed after the collision but was partially reopened at 11 a.m. CST to southbound traffic. For northbound vessels, the section will be open 6:00 p.m. CST Friday to 4 a.m. CST Saturday, while southbound traffic is stopped.
The Coast Guard said it was notified at approximately 1:58 a.m. that a construction barge, towed by the tug Alydar, and a tank barge, towed by the motor vessel Clarence W. Settoon, collided causing a 10-foot b 5-foot gash in the tank barge above the waterline.
The tank barge was loaded with 3,535 barrels, or about 148,470 gallons, of Louisiana sweet crude oil at the time of impact and an undetermined amount of oil was released into the lower Mississippi River. The Coast Guard did add that the amount of oil released is estimated to be substantially less than the total of the tank’s contents.“We are aggressively responding to this incident and have deployed pollution investigators from Sector New Orleans and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to assess the situation,” said Coast Guard Captain of the Port New Orleans, Capt. Pete Gautier. “We are working quickly and efficiently with our local and state partners to clean up product in the water and protect the maritime ecosystem and natural resources that are important to our national economy and essential to the livlihood and way of life for coastal communities.”

Health-Children Exposed To Violence May Age More Quickly
By: Elixed Nava

New research conducted by doctors at the Duke University Medical Center has found children exposed to bullying or other types of violence may develop more slowly than other children. In a report published April 24 in the journal Molecular Psychiatry researchers explain DNA of bullied children often shows sign of wear similar to advanced aging. “Children who experience extreme violence at a young age have a biological age that is much older than other children,” says Shalev to WebMD.com “Children who experience violence appear to be aging at a faster rate.” Youth violence is widespread in the U.S. today. More than900,000 children are victims of abuse or neglect annually in the United States. Many children get bullied now days a lot. Bullying can lead to violence which hurts many children.
In addition, the more violence the children experienced, the shorter their telomeres were. Shorter telomeres are linked to early death and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, the researchers wrote. Guarding children against violence could be an effective way of curbing the number of people affected by chronic diseases. Researchers suggested that good exercise, nutrition, and stress reduction may help reverse some of the negative impacts, but the best cure is clearly to avoid exposure to violence in the first place and to reduce instances of violence in our culture.

Google Celebrated Gideon Sunback's birthday!
By: Gie Young Kang
April 24, 2012 was the 132nd birthday of Gideon Sundback, developer of the zipper. He was born on April 24,1880 and died on June 21,1954 at age 74. He was born in Sweden and went to Germany. In Germany, Sundback took an exam to become an engineer and later came to United States. He was an electrical engineer who worked at Westing House Electric and Manufacturing in 1905. A year later in 1906, Sundback was hired to work for Universal Fastener Company of Hoboken, New Jersey. This is when Sundback started to develop the zipper.
That company made Gideon Sundback responsible for improving "Judson C-Curity Fastener." So his improved version of C-Curity Fastener was "Plako," which was still not so successful. Then, he solved the problem in 1913 and created "Hookless Fastener No.1." In 1914, a year later, he made "Hookless Fastener No.2," which is now known as the zipper. The name zipper was given by B.F. Goodrich Company in 1923. Finally, he got awarded the Gold Medal of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science in 1951. Zippers are now used in clothing such as jackets or even in shoes.

On Wednesday, April 25, at 5 p.m., Virgil Middle School students, parents, and staff gathered in the Auditorium to watch the student play production of “The Quest For Quasi.” The play is a fractured fairytale-which is when traditional fairytales are combined to create a completely different plot. In the play, Red Riding Hood chooses Quasimodo in a dating game and as they go out on their first date at Subway, the Wicked Witch takes Quasi as hostage. As a result, Red goes on a quest for quasi (where she meets other fairy tale characters such as: Pinocchio, fairy Godmothers, a fairy Godfather, and Tinker Bell) in able to save her beloved hunchback.
The following are the participants of the play:
- Annie Yoo as Red Riding Hood
- Franklin Franco as Quasimodo
- Amy Perez as Puss in Boots
- Melkim Urquilla as Prince Charming
- Jesus Oxlaj as Big Bad Wolf
- Camille Samonte as Cinderella
- Erika Buot as Wicked Witch of the West
- Joseph Murcia as Aladdin and Knight
- Ji-Ye (Julia) Lee as Fairy Godmother and Damsel
- Alexander Rostran as Fairy Godfather
- Betsy Mora as Fairy Godmother and Red, Jr.

- NaRyung Kim: Stage and Light Manager
- Mr. Happi Price and Ms. Caroline Goin: Directors
These students met up after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:00 pm for about 2 months. Each day, they developed their acting skills and rehearsed for the play. When I interviewed Coach Happi, he said “working with different personalities and watching them grow was definitely fun for me.” He also added that school plays are important “because they help build social skills and it is a way to find yourself by playing someone else.” Ms. Goin, on the other hand, said “ Watching students grow as actors and develop their characters was most fun for me. It was a magical thing to see.”
When it comes to the audience, it seems like most people enjoyed the performance. Kaitlin Reyes, an InLa 8th grader at Virgil Middle School, said “The play was awesome, funny, and dramatic.” Nicole Cirineo, also an InLa 8th grader at Virgil Middle School, said “I really liked the play, and my friends also liked it very much. I especially liked the supporting characters. I thought they were very humorous. Especially, Cinderella, Big Bad Wolf, and Prince Charming. However, I still liked the main characters.”

Food and Obesity
Fast food has been around since the early 1900’s. The popularity grew more in the 1940’s with the birth of good Ole Mickey D’s. He‘s would also sell his food very cheaply. Out of nowhere people started making there own fast food restaurant in Los Angeles. The fast food has started to raise the amount of obesity and cancer during the same time period. Everyday nearly one/third of us children aged 4-19 eat fast food, which likely packs about six extra pounds per. child.
More than 60% of the adults get obesity because of eating unhealthy food like hamburgers, hotdog, chicken nuggets, fries, and all those fat food. Also about 40% of you young children get obesity because they eat nasty and unhealthy food. A recommendation is to eat healthy food like pasta, vegetables, salads, drinking water, fruits, etc. No drinking alcohol or soda. Those are some idea of eating healthy foods. The Madeleine McCann Case
5/23/12
By David Gonzalez- Leon
5 years ago, toddler Madeleine McCann disappeared on a vacation in Portugal with her family. Madeleine was about to be 4 years old when she was abducted. In 9 days she would have been 4. It has been 5 years since her disappearance in 2007, but some people still think she’s alive. The Metropolitan police released an “Age Progression” photo of how Madeleine might look now that she’s 9 years old. The police made 3 investigations, but had no leads. She was with her family in seaside resort of Praia da Luz.
The case was closed on July 2008 due to lack of clues. The case was reopened this year. Her parents have offered millions of dollars as a reward for finding her. The police suspected a 33 year old guy living with his mom in a nearby apartment. The police also suspected Madeleine’s Parents, but didn’t arrest them for an interview because they thought, “Why would they harm her while her sisters were also there?” 40,000 pieces of information were collected since her abduction. Police believe she is still in Portugal.

Students Wonder How Hard It is to Be a Teacher
March 27, 2012
By: Giselle Flores and Tony Chavez
We noticed for every period there are about 20-30 students. We were wondering if it was hard to keep up knowing every student’s name. We asked Mr. Sanchez if it was hard for him to memorize students’ names. He said “now it’s easy but before it was kind of difficult, it is easier to memorize the bad student’s name.” Then we asked Mr. Garcia. He said, “not really because after a while you memorize by calling people out or bad students. It’s not as hard as you think.” Then we asked Mr. Garcia if it was hard to be a teacher? He said “it isn’t hard but you need certain skills for it.” The next question we asked was “What things were/are complicated for you as a teacher?” He said “not having a conference period, because I have all 6 periods and I usually have to do work before or after school.” We the students were wondering what age teachers would want to retire. We asked Mr. Garcia and he said “I don’t want to retire but if I didn’t work as a teacher I would want to volunteer for things because I like to be busy.” This shows that Mr. Garcia really likes being a teacher.
The we asked Mr. Garcia he said “not really because after a while you memorize by calling people out or bad students it’s not as hard as you think. Probably after 3 weeks in the beginning of school.” Then we asked Mr. Garcia

7.4 earthquake in Mexico

In Mexico a 7.4 Earthquake affected thousands of people’s lives. This earthquake was the most powerful earthquake since 2003. The places were Tijuana and the southern part of California. Many people’s houses and buildings collapsed; they don’t know where to live.
People didn’t expect the earthquake; some people were at home; some were outside. “The magnitude-5.1 aftershock struck 36 miles south of Mexicali at 4:05 p.m. Friday. No damages have been reported, but the area continues to suffer from numerous aftershocks.” (LA TIMES). In that same place a bridge collapsed but there were no accidents. There were only 2 deaths but the rest were injured.
In the Angel Tower people were thinking the building wasn’t going to collapse so they stayed in the building and waited for the earthquake to stop. After a few minutes passed people started to notice that the buildings walls were crumbling so all the workers went outside as fast as they could. Now those people who experienced the earthquake were scared to go back inside to their homes and they slept outside of their homes. The next day there were still no signs of people’s death. But some people were injured.
