Childhood Obesity
Jose Luis Rodriguez Period 6
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The percentage of children ages 6-11 in the United States who was obese increased 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years over the same period. In 2008, more than one third of the children and adolescents were over weighted. Children adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and more risk to type 2 diabetes.
Preventing obesity:
Some solutions for childhood obesity are trying some low fat, low sugar things for eating. Parents can help by setting limits on TV and computer. No more than 2 hours a day of both since you can turn to a potato couch. School services directors and managers can help by making sure that breakfast and lunches are healthier. Also you should exercise more and eat healthier since we eat a lot of calories a day.

The new ride of Disneyland cars land
Mark Aguilar
6.14.12
Disney land has been announcing the ride since one or two months ago but now it’s opening June 15 of this year. California adventure resort will be closed one day before the grand opening because it will be many reporters asking questions about the ride. Also when they open the new ride it will have a new street called Buena Vista to the list of streets. The new ride will be how California was in the 1920’s and the 1930’s. The riding hour for this ride will be 8am-midnight but for the other attractions will be open at 9am-11pm.
Mater’s junkyard and Jamboree will be having riding tiny tractors with a juke box. And Luigi’s flying tires will be long-gone flying. And the Carration café will reopen Wednesday June 13 with inside seating and menu counters. In conclusion, I hope everyone must go to try the new ride when it opens in June 15 of this year.

L.G.B.T Teens Suffer Too!
Debora Agustin
Per.6
Many people suffer in a certain lifetime or age. But the people who mostly suffer most of the times would be Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transsexuals teens. This is because most of the time people make fun of them or don't comprehend how they are. These kind of people are the most likely to be inclined on drugs and alcohol than the other teens who are straight. According to a new nationwide survey of more than 10,000 gay and lesbian are young people.
Most of them are verbally harassed by their peers at school. 52% Gays experiment with drugs and alcohol. I think the only reason they do this would be because of their sadness and that people don't accept who they really are. Many L.G.B.T teens change their identities almost hour by hour depending on where they are at and who is around. Many kids get beaten up because of their sexuality.

Budget Cuts
Mark Aguilar
6/14/12
Budget cuts have been getting worse since the past years because now there is lots more money that has been cut now. This is because the worst case has happened for a “$6 billion budget, which would eliminate thousands of jobs”. This will cause chaos because many jobs will be lost and not many people will be earning money and not working. According to the LA TIMES,” the budget plan could change and even if it approved by the school board. This will cause for schools to have less money and transportation for schools in addition, there will be less teachers because about the budget cut. In conclusion, the budget cut in the LAUSD district has gotten worse over the past years.

A mom Charged with allegedly aiding daughter, Classmates vandalism
A Northridge woman faces several criminal charges in connection with help her 14-year-old daughter and her teenage classmates allegedly received in the vandalizing of former friends' homes with human feces and scrawled swastikas, city prosecutors said Monday. Prosecutors say Catharine Whelped, 43, has been charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She also faces two counts of vandalism, two counts of trespass and two counts of tampering with a vehicle in connection to aiding and abetting the juveniles, according to prosecutors.
"The conduct alleged in this case is unacceptable in our society," City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said in a statement. "The persons responsible for such conduct, including parents, will be held accountable for their actions." Whelped is accused of helping her daughter and classmates exact revenge on at least two of her former friends in April, prosecutors said, when she allegedly drove her daughter and two of her friends, age 13 and 14, to the home of one of their former middle school friends.
Once there, the three juveniles threw toilet paper into the trees and on the property, prosecutors said. The girls then allegedly poured maple syrup on the front porch and smeared human feces on a vehicle at the property, according to prosecutors. The defendant then drove the teens to a second property, officials with the city attorney's office said, where the teens again teepeed the property, smeared feces on the porch and poured syrup on the vehicle.

Pakistan does not want to cooperate

President Obama welcomed more than 60 world leaders to his heavily guarded hometown for a NATO summit is the start for America and its allies to begin pulling combat troops from Afghanistan. The two-day summit is the largest in the 63-year history of the military members. NATO stands for the 28 member states from North America and Europe. It was made at the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949. Article five of the treaty stays that if an attack happens against one of the member states it should be an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked member, with armed forces if needed. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari did not have a warm welcome.
White House officials made it clear they were furious over Pakistan's continued refusal to reopen ground routes used to move fuel and other war supplies into Afghanistan. Pakistan closed its roads after U.S. airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November. During the summit in Chicago, North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations are expected to ratify a U.S.-backed plan to take most of the 130,000 foreign troops by the end of 2014 and then give the government in Kabul billions of dollars in military help to battle the Taliban.

Rape and Torture Plagueesis Hidalgo, Luz Perez, and Diana Zelaya
March 26, 2012
Many troops in Myanmar have been murdering, torturing and raping citizens. It started around nine months ago, leading to the dislocation of 75,000 people. Government soldiers blocked and attacked people with light and heavy weapons, burning down villages, kidnapping women, and forcing children to become porters. Thousands of scared refugees have crossed into China to escape from violence. Thousands of soldiers are shooting and killing them.
This is newsworthy because the President had promised them to have their freedom, however since then there has been violence going on. We interviewed people asking, what they thought of the Government soldiers murdering and kidnapping young people? Linda Ceballos said, “It’s dumb because they’re just making matter worse.” Also Yeho Lee said, “It’s inhuman and a violation of human rights.”

The Eclipse 2012
Myzell Hardnett
June 8,2012
The Eclipse was on Sunday 5:24. It was over Southern California, U.S, and China. People called it the “the ring of fire” because it was at the moon was at the center of the sun. While the eclipse was happening Japan was having news about this. There was an eclipse on 1839 and then 1994. Started at 5:24 then ended at 7:42. The Griffith Observatory observe the Eclipse.
A guy named Fred Espenak said “there will be an eclipse in 2071”, but it looks like he was wrong about that. The best place to see the eclipse was on the Northern California. The eclipse might cause permanent damage to the eyesight. Wearing sunglasses will not protect you from the eclipse. So the eclipse is very dangerous to the naked human eye.

188 Day Cyle
By: Linda Ceballos, Jessica Chavez, Cynthia Moreno, Destiny Santana

There’s been a rumor all over the web about an earthquake that California should be expecting for the last week of March. Supposedly it has been proven that every 188 days there is an earthquake with a high magnitude that strikes various cities around the globe.
Based on seismological records they have evidence on the cycle. On February 27, 2010 an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile, 188 day after on September 4, 2010 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand. The cycle has been going on and on for the past few years. The cycle has been proven right for the past 5 cycles including the 7.4 earthquake in the City of Mexico on March 20, 2012.
We interviewed a couple of students from Virgil Middle School about what their reactions are to this cycle, this is what they had to say. Yeho Lee said “I don’t know if it’s true but if they studied it professionally, then people should be prepared for it”. Josue Marroquin said “I Think It’s true because it’s possible, anything can happen at this point”. Nobody really knows what’s going to happen but if the 188 day cycle theory is true everyone should be prepared with important materials that will keep them safe.

Terror has struck in northern Uganda. Our community has tried to make Kony famous so people can know who he is and so he can get arrested. Kony kidnaps girls and boys; he uses girls as sex slaves and boys as child soldiers for his own militia. Our community supports his arrest for all his horrible and terrible deeds. An estimated 66,000 children became child soldiers.
Joseph Kony was born in 1961 in Odek, a village east of Northern Uganda. Kony loved spending time with his siblings but, he had problems and dealt with them through physical violence, which makes him a violent person. Kony was an altar boy for several years, but then he stopped going to church and he dropped out of school around the age of fifteen.
Kony received huge attention in March 2012 when he was the subject of the video on Youtube called “Kony 2012” by filmmaker Jason Russell. The 27 minute video posted on Youtube by Invisible Children became known because so many people around the world watched the video on the internet. The video has been viewed more than 80 million times March 17.

by: Dayanara Galvez
Period: 5
Summer is coming, most of the time people call it the ice cream season, but that’s just a snack what about a meal? A great meal that will be just healthy but great in the summer especially for those people out there that love seafood. Why not try some fish tacos?
You could make at home simple recipe just by buy a package Gorton’s extra crunchy fish tenders, flour tortillas, red onions, jar tartar sauces, romaine lettuce. The only thing you have to do is bake the fish according to the package directions. Then wrap the stack of tortillas in foil and place in the oven during the last five minutes of baking. After transfer the warm tortillas to plates and on the other plate you will have the tender fish, few slices of the onion, dollop of the tartar sauce, and top with ¼ cup of the lettuce. Finally place it in to the tortilla and fold it over and take a bite of it.
If you want to try the best hot spot in L.A that sell fish tacos. You may go to Ricky’s Fish tacos at 1400 N Virgil Ave, Los Angeles, CA or you may go to “The Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada located at 1650 Hillhurst Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90027. An American soldier walked off his base in a remote southern Afghan village shortly before dawn Sunday and opened fire on civilians inside their homes, killing at least 16, including 9 children. This took place in 3 villages in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province. The soldier would walk and knock door to door breaking in to kill the people living inside. The Taliban is promising revenge for the killing of the 16 Afghan civilians by the American soldier. "Dodgers' Mark Ellis quick action saved his leg"
June 8,2012
Mark Ellis was much more than solid at second, he made every play. In his 37 games, he had yet to make an error. Offensively, he was hitting a solid .273 and proving a steady No. 2 hitter; he was second on the team in runs. On Friday Night Dodgers’ second basemen had emergency surgery to drain blood and fluids from his left leg he injured. The leg surgery on Mark Ellis apparently was even more serious than first suspected. Dodger manager Don Mattingly said Sunday if the surgery had not been performed that Ellis was hours away from losing his lower left leg. Which is why his loss for about six weeks is the most threatening the entire Dodgers’ injuries.
Surgeons cut an approximately six-inch incision on the outside of his left calf Saturday to drain blood and fluid that was applying severe pressure to the muscle. Ellis is scheduled to remain in the hospital to allow continued drainage until the flap is sewed back on Tuesday. Ellis was placed on the disabled list Saturday and is expected to be out for approximately six weeks.

St. Patrick's Day
By: Miriam Marroquin, Melanie Perez, Isabel Osorio, Jae Wook Choi, and Ryan Pizarro
St. Patrick’s’ day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17 every year. It commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.
The day is generally characterized by the attendance of church services, wearing of green attire and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating, and drinking alcohol beverages, which is often prosecuted during the rest of the season. An interviewed student named Marybeth Rauls commented, “The event that I enjoy doing the most during Saint Patrick’s day is pinching people who aren’t wearing green, which is a tradition that we have here in the United States.”
Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Island, Newfoundland, in Labrador, and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish Diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the U.S., Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and among others. Today Saint Patrick’s Day is probably the most widely celebrated Saint’s day in the world.

A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital in Sunday at the Dodger Stadium parking lot. The pregnant woman was check by many doctors but luckily she and her baby did not suffer any injuries. The woman has not still been identify but probably they are still going top try to find her name. They saw the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Impala. This whole problem started when the Dodger fan with the pregnant woman thought that the car in back of them hit his Impala. The other Dodger fan thought that the car in front of them hit their Camry. This disagreement went to far in words that they started to fight. Then after 2 minutes of the fight three friends from the Camry came to help his friend. While they were arresting the four men they were on the way to take the lady to the hospital. The woman went to the hospital of USC medical center. The police said that the woman is witness cause she was right there when everything was happening and she did not even call the police. Bill Murphy said “ this is the first reported incident of violent crime in the Dodger Stadium since the opining day”.
The four men who were arrested all suffered at least three or more cuts and bruises. While they were investigating they noticed something that some of the men had a record of arrests but they were not involved in any gangs or were a gang member. The woman in the car was examined at the hospital as a precaution. The four men were identifying as “Morales, 20; Alan Trujillo, 29; Alejandro Briceno, 29; and Ulises Briceno, 26.”The men have been released after posting bail, $30,000 each.

Child found dead in 30ft. Hole in New Mexico
By: Chris Herrera, Anthony Hernandez, and Wendy Hernandez
3/14/12
The boy was found two days after he disappeared while he was playing outside his home next door. They started rescuing the boy but unfortunately, they discovered that the conditions inside the hole were not survivable, and the amount of oxygen that was there. Some of his young cousins were at his house on Saturday when they had last seen him playing in the yard. The hole was located by the house of his neighbors. They had said that there is a possibility that he climbed the fence and he accidently had fallen in the hole. His mom said that maybe he had thrown one of his toys over the fence and went to get it. When she went for a minute inside and then came back out, he was gone
The next day after they had a day break trying to find him on Sunday morning, a detective found the 14 inch-wide hole. The detective wasn’t able to see down in the hole because it was deep and unfortunately they discovered that inside the hole was a body of a small child. They put a flashlight down and saw that it was a boy dressed in clothing that the boy, Samuel, who was gone, was wearing. They brought a large excavator that was used to rescue the body. They were not sure if it was Samuel, the boy they were looking for, but they said that therewas a possibility that it might been him.

The Virgil Middle School Dance
By: Jenesis Hidalgo, Theresa Aguilar, and Luz Perez
March 14, 2012
Because the Valentine's Dance was cancelled last February 14, due to the lack of publicity, Virgil Middle School will have a dance on Friday, March 16, 2012 for Saints Patrick’s Day. The dance will be held at the gym during lunch and the tickets will be sold at the student store for 25 cents. According to Mr. Goin, the dance will not have refreshments “we will not have refreshments but if the students say they want it, we'll have them, but for now, no.” We also asked Mr. Goin about the significance of the dance and he said “it’s a social event for students to experience.”
This article is important because many students might not know that there is going to be a dance, so this could be their reminder. Also this dance could be the way to express your fortitude to Saints Patrick’s Day. We have spoken with the students of Virgil Middle School and it’s mostly about how the dance is not important. They did not know there was going to be a dance. They thought it would be a waste of time and money. However, some students said they are keyed up to go to the dance and ready to go party with their friends and loved ones.

Child Found Dead in a 30 Foot Hole
By Danielle Calzado, Karen Ruiz, Elexid Nava, and Oscar Quintanilla
March 13, 2012
Police spokesperson Robert McDonald confirmed that the dead body was 4-year-old, Samuel Jones. The hole the child had been found in was located in Jones' neighbor’s backyard. Samuel may have climbed a fence that separated their homes and had possibly fallen into the hole.
Searchers later sent a camera down and confirmed that the child was thirty feet down that was around fourteen inches in diameter. Carlsbad Police Chief Daniel Fierro said that the hole was not “survivable” because of its dryness and lack of oxygen. Temperature and oxygen levels were later taken and showed no signs of life.
Samuel lived with his parents and two older siblings, a boy and a girl, ages 6 and 7.Officials believed that the 30 feet hole was an old well. The boy’s death will be investigated as a homicide because the circumstances were unknown.
We interviewed students in general about how they felt about the child found dead. Joshua Cabrera felt uncomfortable because he was so young. He thought that parents should be more aware because anything can happen nowadays. Also, he said that the child’s parents should not be arrested because they didn’t do it and it was the child’s mistake.

On Monday at around 9:30 am the body of a newborn baby was found in the Nyeland Acres strawberry field in Ventura County. It was in the field in the 3200 block of Central Avenue in an unincorporated area northwest of Camarillo. The body of the baby might have been dumped there between Sunday night and early Monday morning. The baby was 6 months old and it was a girl. Officers believe that the baby was carried full term and that the cause of her death is not known.
A 43 year old guy named Gabriel Ortiz found the body while checking a hose line near a row of poppies bordering the field. Eric Buschow said the mother of the baby could have left her at fire station or hospital. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

About three years ago a judge turned 62 years old. Doctors had discovered that he had pancreas. The doctors said he only had 4-6months to live. Since he has pancreas doctors gave him medication. With all the medication in his body, he is constantly getting nausea and pain.
When it comes to eat he doesn’t feel like eating because of the pills. It is also hard for him to go to sleep. How come with marijuana he doesn’t get nauseas and doesn’t have pain. Before he is going to eat he said that he takes a few puffs. That gives him the appetite to eat again. After eating he takes a few more puffs and gets the feel to go to sleep. He said that marijuana helps him.

Jack Andraka from Maryland at 15 years old won a prize at the International Science and Engineering Fair on Friday. He won a $75,000 prize for developing a urine and blood test that detects pancreatic cancer with 90 percent accuracy, which is 20 times cheaper and faster than up to date test. Pancreatic cancer is when someone has cancer in the pancreas or a tumor which is right behind the stomach. Jack is from Crownsville and received the award at a ceremony in a fair downtown from Pittsburgh. Two more students, Nicholas Schiefer, 17 years old, from Ontario, Canada and Ari Dyckovsky, 18 years old, from Leesburg received an Intel Foundation Young Scientists Award worth $50,000. Nicholas won the award because of his study on “micro search” which he hopes to improve some engines capabilities.
Ari researched about the science of quantum teleportation. He found that atoms are linked in a process called “entanglement” which is when protons, electrons, and neutrons (they make up an atom) interact physically and then become separated. Many students from many countries compete in this science competition. Even this year, more than 1,500 were chosen to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. “This competition encourages millions of students to engage their skills for innovation and develop promising solutions for global challenges,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation.

Obama Raised By Transgender Nanny
By: Stephanie Rojas and Tony Chavez

President Obama’s nanny took care of him when he was about two years old. Now Obama’s former nanny lives in Indonesian streets with fear. Evia was born as a boy, but she believes that she is a girl, not a boy. Evia has been beaten for a lifetime because of her identity. “The turning point came when Evia found a transgender friend's body floating on a backed up sewage canal.” Where Evia lives, the transgender lifestyle is very complex to understand.
Many people who were transgender had to find a job in prostitution because it was hard to find any other job. Evia says that she tried to get a job as a maid but, "no one would hire me." Transgender people who want to be what their true gender is find it very difficult to fit into society. Some people like Evia decide to hide their feelings.
“The country's highest Islamic body has decreed that they are required to live as they were born because each, "must learn to accept their nature," says Ichwan Syam. Obama’s nanny took care of him and his little baby sister for about two years. Now Obama’s nanny is living in Jakarta, trying to make money for her food. `
When Evia was little, her father dressed her with boy's clothes because his father wanted a boy not a girl. So her father never let her wear a dress from her mother. He would always dress her like a boy. "He wanted me to act like a boy, even though I didn't feel it in my soul."

There’s been a terrifying story that has been spreading throughout the web these past few days. It’s a about a movie called “Kony2012’’ that’s has been made in order to support the capture of the Ugandan Rebel leader Joseph Kony. Kony has been accused of having a lord’s resistance army called the (LRA). Over the past 20 years he has reportedly been abducting about 30,000 boys and girls turning them into his soldiers and sex slaves. Many People in the Northern side of Uganda are frozen in fear, children have grown up with no hope and future.
A group called Invisible children made a video that tells people how exactly they plan on putting an end to Kony’s reign. Everyone can help in capturing Kony by simply making him famous they don’t want to celebrate him but they want him to be known as the bad person. They want to make noise all over the globe so that Kony will be found and brought to justice. The Kony 2012 video on YouTube has been viewed 41 million times. On Facebook 445,000 people have liked the page. On April 20,2012 there’s going to be a huge event called “Cover Night’’ were people all over the country will put up hundreds of posters over night so that when people will wake up, they’ll run into a Kony 2012 poster.
Virgil student Diana Zelaya said, “he should be captured because he’s kidnapped so many kids and put fear in their lives.” Elijah Azuela also said, “He should be captured because he has done a lot of wrong things to many children.” Apparently, Kony is now infamous. Everyone wants him to pay the consequences for what he’s been doing to many innocent children. Hopefully someday they can put an end to Kony’s reign of terror.

Child Found in 30ft Hole

March 12,2012
Samuel Jones, 4 year old, was found dead from a narrow 30 foot deep hole. In Carlsbad early Monday, spokesperson Robert McDonald confirmed the body belonged to the boy. The neighborhood is a mix of homes and vacant lots. A 4 foot high chain fence separates the boy’s home from his neighbors where the hole is located. Samuel lives with his parents and two siblings, a boy and girl ages 6 and 7. Its possible Samuel could have climbed the fence and merely fallen into the hole. Before he disappeared, Jones’ mom said he was playing with his toys outside, she quoted “he may have thrown them over the fence and went over to get them.” Mrs. Jones went inside the house for a minute and when she came out, he was gone. She said it was like 25 minutes before she called the police trying to find him herself.
Virgil Middle school student, Eugene Rhee said, “I feel pretty sad because his been there for a long time and possibly he fell accidentally or someone pushed him purposely, maybe the incident was an accident?" Yeho Lee says, "I feel pretty sad because his been there for a long time, he might have possibly fallen accidentally or someone pushed him on purpose."

Millions of people in the USA and through out the world have experience poisoning. Food poisoning can does not have to come from food; it can be caught directly by another person. “Bacteria can cause food poisoning in two different ways.” One effect is that the bacteria can causes the small intestine to not absorb the liquid in the food. The other bacteria also cause harm to the body. Bacteria can get in the food by “water that is used during growing or shipping that may contain animal or human waste.”

Later that day he decided to go pray for his granddaughter in an unknown place. Unfortunately, Angel passed away at 4:10 P.M. after maintaining her alive in any way; making it impossible for her to survive. Her head injuries were too severe for a little girl to handle.
An interviewed parent named Adriana Perez stated, “The death of this poor little girl is heartbreaking. But also teaches all of us a lesson of faith and the precautions we must take with all of these natural disasters happening around the country. In order for the people in affected areas to survive, they must be prepared. A Virgil student named Marybeth Rauls also commented, “It is all very sad, however Angel is now in better conditions than she would be if she her left here as an orphan with no future behind her. It may sound harsh, but to me that is the reality.”

The eclipse was created as the moon passes in front of the sun, but didn’t blur it, so a crescent shaped sliver was formed.
The last eclipse that was visible in the United States was on May 10, 1994, which is 18 years ago; so many people were excited to see it on May 20, 2012. The annual eclipse didn’t block the sun completely like a full eclipse, but still people around the world were excited to see the eclipse. Many experts said that people shouldn’t look at the sun directly because it could damage their eyesight permanently. Even though sun damage does not come immediately come, it’s still not safe to just look at the eclipse with no protection. Some people even went to an observatory center or museum to view the annual eclipse. For people who didn’t see the “Ring of Fire” they’ll have to wait until 2071 for the next eclipse according to NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak. To conclude, the eclipse was a great thing to see for those people who have never seen one before.

A teenager shooting in Ohio was suspected of shooting in school, and shot and killed three students. This event took place on February 28, 2012. The child was taken to juvenile court by Geauga County deputies in Chardon.
On Tuesday Feb. 28, 2012 a pole with a red flag could be seen for the three students killed at Chardon High School in Ohio. The teenager stole the gun from his grand father’s barn and took it to school with a knife, and to the 1,100-student Chardon High, and fired ten shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table, prosecutor David Joyce said.
An 18-year-old girl who was hurt in the shootings, was released from the hospital on Tuesday, and was home with her family after the shooting. The girl's family decline to comment. The second injured teen remained in serious condition at a suburban Cleveland hospital.
Carl Henderson, a neighbor of the suspect's grandparents is a retired police officer and former Geauga County sheriff, as well as a longtime neighbor of the grandparents of suspect T.J. Lane. He said he has spoken to the grandfather, Thomas Lane, about the gun. The suspect's grandfather believes the gun is the same, "because the gun was there the day before, in the barn," said Henderson, 74, who says he's been friends with the boy's family for nearly 50 years.
Mr. Gurr said he did not know why the kid shot the student’s but maybe they did something to him and he wanted a revenge on the three students. “Since it happen in the morning and there was nobody to check the student’s when they are entering school and no detector.” When asked about students ever bringing guns to Virgil, he replied, “students have only been caught with bb guns.” He added that there has been a, “school wide effort to teach kids not to bring weapons to school" and that the administration has done random searches.

A 17-year-old named T.J. Lane killed three students and wounded two at Chardon High School in Ohio. T.J. Lane was a sophomore, stole the gun, a Ruger 22-caliber mark III target pistol, from an uncle who legally purchased the weapon in August 2010. The gun was bought at a gun shop called Mentor in Ohio. Charges filed in juvenile court accuse 17-year-old T.J Lane of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, and felonious assault.
Hundreds of people stood shoulder to shoulder along the street on a cold windy Saturday morning to honor one of the three teenagers killed in the high school shooting. Those honoring the teen wore the schools colors of red and black, huddled in hoods, knit hats, and blankets. They held U.S flags and signs featuring red hearts and saying, “we are one heartbeat.” Some expressed continued disbelief about Monday's attack.

Why Travel
By: Nicole Cirineo
12/31/12
Traveling isn’t new, may people travel to different countries, cities, states, places, etc. all the time. The claim that only rich people can travel isn’t true, because even those in the middle-class can also travel as long as it’s in their budget. Some people travel or take a vacation yearly, monthly, weekly, and others just do it occasionally. People are most likely to travel to different places during vacations such as during the summer when kids don’t have school or during the winter for the holidays. However, others may wonder why those travelers emigrate from their homes to other destinations/places. They might also wonder why those people choose to take vacations at other places instead of where they currently at.
Those who travel have numerous reasons why they would want to leave where they are currently at to be somewhere else. One of the most common reasons is that they want to take a vacation, experience new cultures, visit family and friends, to have fun, and experience relaxation. Some more reasons are to find one’s self, to get away from their current situations, to pursue their dreams or dream jobs, to experience different seasons, to be able to see n person beautiful scenery, and for business. “People travel because they are writers. They want to give the readers relevant article to their readers especially when they are making story in that particular place.” People also “travel because they want to see their soul mates. Some people believe that there is only one person for them and if they haven't had much luck searching in their area, …they can still find it in other place.” (ezinearticles.com)
There are also countless benefits of traveling such as, increasing your knowledge and widening your perspective on life. It has been stated that traveling makes new experiences that increase your resourcefulness. Those people are said to embrace change more. Another benefit of traveling is that it creates wonderful memories with your family and friends that will last a lifetime. Traveling also builds a stronger bond of friendship and relationships with your loved ones.

Virginia Beach teen dies after car strikes bicyle
By Destiny Santana, Cynthia Moreno, and Linda Ceballos
In Virginia Beach, Virginia, a teenager died Thursday afternoon from injuries instantly after he was hit by an automobile while riding a bicycle at the intersection of Rosemont and Bonney Roads on Thursday morning.
Police say GT Goldie, 15, of the 3600 block of Silina Drive, was traveling southbound on Rosemont Road on a BMX-style bicycle around 9:40 a.m. According to police Goldie went through the intersection at Bonney Road and rode into the path of a 2001 Mazda 626.
The driver of the Mazda had just exited I-264 WB and was heading west onto Bonney Road. Officials say after hitting the bicyclist, the Mazda ran into a Honda Accord that was waiting at the stoplight on Bonney Road.
Goldie was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries. At around 1:20 p.m., police say he died as a result of those injuries.
Police say their opening investigation indicates that the Mazda had the right-of-way. They also say Goldie was not wearing a helmet. No one else was injured in the crash.
No one has been charged in the incident, which remains under investigation

Consequences for Treating the School Like a Dump
By: Miriam Marroquin, Isabel Osorio, Ryan Pizarro, and Jae Wook Choi
Mr. Thompson
Have you ever littered? Well think twice before you do. This is because here at Virgil Middle School, administrators on our lower field have been finding lots of trash. The consequences were that vending machines were closed and the student store too for several days. Another consequence is that Mr. Thompson is checking backpacks before students enter the lower field.
The problem is not only in the lower field, but also in the upper field. The school wants students not to litter in the cafeteria also. Trash is something schools should not have to worry about. Students should always maintain the upper and lower fields. Some students do not understand that consequences are not only for them but for the whole school.
We have asked Mr. Thompson a couple of questions on littering the lower field. We asked him if students learned their lesson and he replied, “Some of the students did.” We also asked him if he would check backpacks again if there was another problem with littering and he said, “Actually, I am checking backpacks if there is another problem.” Our final question was whether every student learned their lesson. He said, “No, but the majority did.”

What Students can do during the Summer
By: Samantha Kasingsing
5/31/12
Many students are excited about summer vacation, although your summer shouldn’t just be sitting in the couch watching television. Students should get up that couch and do some interactive activities; such as going to the park, walking around the neighborhood, etc. Research shows that kids, who watch T.V more often (four hours max continuously), are most likely to be overweight. Therefore, it is important to exercise everyday because you will stay healthy and wont feel lazy.

Gas Prices Are Affecting President Obama
By Ana Leonardo, Tony Chavez, and Stephanie Rojas
In California, the prices of gas are rising every day. The prices have gotten higher by almost $2.00 in the past few months. During the 2012 campaign, President Obama said, “Some politicians are seeing high gas prices as an election opportunity. You’re shocked I know.”
“Republicans are hoping to use rising gas prices as an election-year issue against Obama, even though there’s likely very little U.S. policymakers can do to affect gas prices in the short term (domestic oil demand is lower than it was in 2007, while production is way up yet gas prices are still high).”
Mitt Romney is trying to remove President Obama from the presidency and will use this issue whether Obama can do anything about it or not.

On February 8 a tragedy occurred on Gilbert Street near Anaheim. A Hit and run kills a three year old and injures her mother severely. Carlos Parra was 20 years old he was the driver that night. His girlfriend is the one who tried to help in the crime. Although she wasn’t in the car with him during to accident she still got arrested for reporting the car stolen after he had called her to report it as if it was actually stolen. The car that was used in the accident wasn’t even Carlos Parra’s car it was actually his sister’s car. They had been living for 3 months and they acted like if nothing had ever happened. Until both of them were arrested on May 16. The suspects were in a relationship.
They had found out that the DNA that they checked in front of the car was actually not the daughter and the mothers DNA> many people say that he didn’t break, but other people say that he actually failed to break, slow, or stop as he was heading near the sidewalk. He was being accused of hitting the mother and the daughter and throwing them both off the sidewalk with the car. When they took the both victims to the hospital and hour later 3 year old Miranda Palacios was pronounced dead due to a blunt force trauma. Her mother had several broken bones.
Carlos Parra was charged with one felony count of vehicular manslaughter. A felony is a serious crime in the common law countries. According to one of the District Attorneys he also has two felony counts of hit and run with permanent death and injury. He can also be sentenced to 19 years in jail. Carlos and his girlfriend have a two year old son. Parra was out of custody on bail for an unrelated robbery case in which is accused of being the driver and using the same car. Parra is going to be arranged on June 1st for a court hearing, while Rebecca is going to be arranged on June 13th.

30 Mexicans escaped jail
By German Matias, Oscar Deleon, Giselle Flores
On Monday 21st, 2012, thirty Mexicans escaped jail. Imprisoned members of the Zetas drug cartel killed 44 inmates from the rival Gulf cartel and then staged a “mass escape, apparently “with the help of prison staff, Mexican officials have said: Rodrigo Medina, governor of Nuevo Leon state, said the prison's director, three other officials and 18 guards had been sacked and were under investigation over the escape. "Unfortunately, a group of traitors has set back the work of a lot of good police," he told a news conference. "The most important thing is to make sure that the people working on the inside are on the side of the law, and that they not be corrupted and collaborate with the criminals, as the investigations indicate they presumably did." Medina confirmed that all 30 escaped were linked to the Zetas as a gang founded by deserters from an all Mexican unit.
We asked Mr. Garcia these questions: What did you think of the jailbreak in Monterrey? He answered “he didn’t hear about it the jailbreak and he isn’t surprised.” Then we asked what can you compare the Mexico prison to America, he answered “less security in Mexico then in America. The next question we asked was what would you do if you were in charged? He answered “Pay the guards more so they wouldn’t have so they won’t have to help the prisoners escape. The last question we ask was that if he had any family members this is what he said,” No I don’t have any one there.”

The Killing of 49 Mexicans
By: Braulio Torres
5/31/12
In Mexico, there was a discovery of 49 mutilated and dumped bodies. Mexican army officials believe that the Zetas gang was responsible for the deaths of the 49 people. The gang was also responsible for attempting to throw off the police by putting banners all over the country. This was to throw the police off of them and place the blame on someone else.
Drug hit men often leave a banner to make the people know that they are responsible for the crime they has been committed. Apparently the bodies have not been identify therefore, the family of the dead can not be contact to let them know about their lost.
The bodies were found because of a mistake from a henchman. Supposedly they were suppose to cut off the bodies feet hands and heads. Then they would have the bodies placed in the main plaza of town. The person to do this was know as the “The Crazy One” had lost their nerves and put the bodies by a nearby highway. They were also taking the blame for other cases to get rid of the trail for the death of 49 people.

Monday February 27, teenager opens fire in the school cafeteria at Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio. Three died and two were wounded. The three that were killed were, Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16. T.J Lane, 17, was the suspect, admitted taking a pistol and a knife to the 1,000 students sitting at a cafeteria table. According to Lane’s grandfather the gun was bought legally in August 2010 in a shop gun. However, Lane told the authorities he stole the gun from his uncle. So far, T.J Lane was taken into juvenile court by Geauga County deputies in Chardon, Ohio Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.
Virgil Middle School’s Police Officer D. Zavala had something to say about how our school survives when something like this happens. He says, “All schools are prepared in case of shooting, we need procedure because we don’t know how people will react in case of an event if we go into a shooting with the bad guy. Some safely measures we will have to take if a school shooting happens at Virgil are for you to ask for help, put school on lock down to the place where the shooter will go. The process is we look for the suspect, all officers can block traffic and cars. We would also call LAPD. If anyone in Virgil ever got injured by a gunshot we would depend on our first aid knowledge and call the ambulance. We all have a hand gun m16’s with the military shot gun, if we ask for help, dogs come, helicopter arrives and gives orders. If someone refuses to open a door, we can breakdown a wall. Our desire is to protect the children.”
VMS student Yeho L. said, “I think the shooting at the school is terrible and sad, the suspect needs help and maybe the student shot the other kids because they had an argument.” Eugene Rhee says, “This could cause students turning paranoid inside and outside the school. Maybe the kid shot them for revenge? There might be some reason like they did something bad.”

Monica Lidioma Weather
Last week’s weather was very ironic. Early in the morning there were always clouds above the air. They were always threatening that it was going to rain and start crying until it felt better. There were also winds’ blowing and blowing and never seemed to stop. Bullying us by messing with our hair, making our eyes dry, and turning our skin from warm to freezing. Then some time during nutrition the condition was warming up a little bit. Still felt the breeze but not as bad as in the morning. The sun was out which sort of blocked out the coldness in the air. Finally after school the humidity was so hot, it felt like a day in the beach. Then all of a sudden it started to sprinkle. Every once in a while there was a teardrop coming down sweetening on us. The sky went from total blue to total gray. It wasn’t raining but it had the humidity warm.
The next day the weather was completely stable. It was hot. The temperature kept on rising and rising up to mid day. Every seat that stood out in the sun was burning. It was similar to the pan when it is being used to fry eggs. The next freezing day rain. Early in the morning the air was just cold. Up to nutrition where the shy just to weep and could never stop. There were ponds of water everywhere that there was nowhere safe to land out foot.
In the past 50 years the United States has rises 2degrees Fahrenheit. Which means this area has increased 20% in the last century. There has been heat wave s and regional droughts have become more frequent than ever. The amount of rainfall has come in the heaviest down pours. According to Projection of Future Precipitation has predicted that the areas in the south will become drier but the areas in the north will be wetter.

Teacher and Student Relationships
By Esther Gonzalez Rios, Dalila Batrez, Melanie Perez
Teacher- student relationships are limited to school work and activities. In some cases, the student – teacher relationships pass the limit if school related activities and turn into a more romantic relationship. There are two cases that show the limits broken between teacher-student and teachers aid-student.
In one of these cases, the teacher and student held a relationship during and before the school year. Matthew Ellsworth, English teacher, had been tutoring a 17 year old girl, whose name has not been released, during the summer to get prepared for the on-coming year. Ellsworth says that she started to get closer to him as they spent time together and eventually they both started a relationship. They did have sexual contact that Ellsworth tries to deny. Their relationship started after he told her about his problems and she hugged and kissed him to try to console him. Allen Caplan, Ellsworth attorney, says that the case is difficult to resolve due to the lack of witnesses. Ellsworth said he was willing to wait for the girl to be 18 so that their relationship could keep on going but it ended in November. The case is half way solved and Ellsworth has been charged with third degree sexual conduct with a minor.
Teacher aid, Nicole McMillan, had a sexual relationship with a 14 year old boy at her home for six weeks. The parents of the student reported the relationship between the aide and their son to police that started the investigation. McMillan claims to not have any sexual contact during school hours because the boy didn’t attend the school McMillan was employed in. McMillan has already been taken to jail on Sunday after the investigation on Saturday. Their relationship led to the teacher’s aide being in jail and her bail was put to $50,000.

Friends of the Los Angeles River ~ The Great Cleanup
by: Irene Pineda
Friends of the Los Angeles River is a non-profit organization founded to help and protect The Los Angeles River. This year is the 23rd annual year that people go volunteer at the LA River to help clean and restore it. FoLAR was founded in 1986 by Lewis MacAdams, on the belief that effective advocacy, education, collaboration and imagination can accomplish great things. This year “The Great L.A River Cleanup” was held on April 28. The L.A River is over 50 miles long, and runs through 14 cities. There were about 15 different locations, and many sites. The river runs through from the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley to the ocean in Long Beach. After the floods in Los Angeles the river became nothing other than a flood control channel after the cement came. Many cleanup activities were held on “National Day of Action”. A nonprofit group called Keep America Beautiful sponsored the Great American Cleanup "National Day of Action" -- organized trash-clearing activities in almost all 50 states. Last year, the Great Cleanup in Los Angeles collected 25 tons of trash. This year, about 4,000 people volunteered to clean the L.A River. California State Senator, Kevin de León supports the river restoration, he sent out a bill to widen legal public access to the L.A River. Volunteers hope to make the L.A River an important part of Los Angeles like it was in its early days about two centuries ago.

Hepatitis C VS HIV
By: Danielle Calzado, Karen Ruiz, Elixed Nava, and Emily Portillo
February 24, 2012
Hepatitis and HIV can kill many Americans. Hepatitis is a disease that causes inflammation in the liver. Hepatitis may occur with limited or not symptoms, but it often leads to jaundice, anorexia, and malaise. Hepatitis last less than sixth months and sometimes it persists longer. HIV “human immunodeficiency virus” causes your immune system to be lower. Infections HIV occur by the transfers of body fluids. In 2007, hepatitis C killed 15,100 Americans accounting for 0.6 percent of all deaths that year. That compared over 12,700 deaths related to HIV.
A similarity between these two diseases is that they are both viruses. The symptoms for HIV are headaches, sore throats, fever, muscle soreness, rash, diarrhea, and joint pain. The Hepatitis symptoms are mild fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you ever have any of this you should immediately see your doctor, and get treated. It’s better to always be aware of what is happening to you and your body.
Students have been wondering what kind of disease they could get at a young age and what precautions they should take. Tigers Roar interviewed Rosa a Supervisor from Virgil MS on what his opinion might be on the diseases. According to Rosa “aids is not curable.” She also said that Hepatitis C is an infectious disease affecting primarily the liver caused by the Hepatitis C (HCV). She thinks that Americans are most likely to die from Aids.

Death Row Vote
By:Braulio Torres
Period 6
5-24-12
California is about to get ready for a major debate. This debate will be about if California would get rid of the death penalty. Instead of the death penalty or the “three-drug procedure”, will be replaced with a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. If this vote is passed, then California will be the 18th state in the nation to be without the death penalty. During the last few years, many states have taken away the death penalty and Connecticut will soon follow. Many citizens believe that they should reject the capital’s penalty since in the past few years, California has only executed around 13 inmates.
Multiple people believe that why should there be a death penalty. People of the government believe that the death penalty isn’t working. People believe that people die of old age instead of the drugs. A federal judge cited that inmates suffer extreme pain while the three-drug procedure. A few people had concluded that the death penalty cost around 187 million more than to have an inmate without parole and life sentence.

Drew Ferraro jumped off his high school roof because he was being bullied. This happened on February 2012.This event happened in Cresenta Valley High school. “If somebody looks upset, hand them a tissue, pat them on the back” his mother said.
His Mom, and dad said that they didn’t know that he was bullied until his son death when she read his journal. They remember him as a caring young man who was a champion of the marginalized and he had a wild sense of humor. His family had told the KCBS that they hope to raise money and want to start a foundation in their son’s name to com pain against bullying.

Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held to the world and it happens more than 175 countries every year. Earth day began on April 22, 1970 and it will probably end on 2015. On the first day of earth day, people promise to help the environment and ever since then earth day had spread all over the world. They knew that the world was getting dirty and that plants and animals were dying. People purchase trees through the National Arbor Day Foundation and they use every dollar to select where to plant new trees.
On Earth day kids take a hike, play in the dark, reuse old clothes, plant some flowers or trees, make a bird feed, play recycling games or they go see animals. Kids can also write letters to the government leaders and corporations about pollution and other environment issues. Kids have to love the world in order to protected it and it encourages them to take pictures, read books, draw pictures and make stories of earth day. People have kids play games, paint t-shirts, plant flowers, or give candy away at festivals on earth day. Kids also sing songs of earth day and recycle and
eat healthy.

By Ana Leonardo and Stephanie Rojas
Now in America the horse slaughter is reopened after five years of been ban. Hauenstein is protesting to stop horse slaughter in all over the world. Hauenstein and her horses left their home on December 6 to protest on horse slaughter. Horses are not only being slaughter in America they are also sent to countries `even overseas.
The horses traveled in a truck without water and food. When horse is waiting in line the co- workers started hitting them till they collapsed. The horses collapsed because they keep poking them and hitting them. After the horses are all hurt they take the horses to a room and start to get all the meat.
We have interview Mike a city year member and we asked him this questions do you think the horse slaughter should be closed? What would you say if you were the co-worker? How would you help the horses by getting slaughter? He responded that he thinks horse slaughter is okay because there killing other animals to .He doesn’t know that he could be a co-worker. It would not help the horses but it will help us.

Choosing Your High School Wisely
By: Cynthia Moreno, Linda Ceballos, Destiny Santana, and Jessica Chavez
The time of year has come for the 8th graders to choose the high school they wish to attend from the Belmont Zone of Choice also known as BZOC. They have to choose between Belmont, Roybal, VAPA, and Miguel Contreras Learning Complex. To make matters harder they have to choose between seventeen high schools in the four high schools. Some students who don’t live in BZOC have to choose between four different types of high schools. As the reporter Cynthia Moreno asked Four different classes what high school they want to go to, the majority of the students want to attend MC (Miguel Contreras) second is Roybal, third is VAPA, and last but not least Belmont. The choice of high school can change the life of a student so, choose wisely.
The New Condom Law for Los Angeles
by Ryan Pizarro, Jae Wook Choi, Miriam Marroquin, and Isabel Osorio
2/27/12
Last week, Los Angele's’ Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that there will be a new law for actors from adult movies to wear a condom when acting. In addition, performers need to get checked every thirty days to see if they have HIV or other STDs. There are locations that performers need to wear condoms like Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
Michael Weinstein said that, “the city of Los Angeles has done the right thing for the performers.” Also he said, “It is not anticipated, based on what we desire or what has been discussed, that it would be necessary to inform police officers.” This is important because Los Angeles is trying to keep performers from getting HIV or other STDs.
”Performers would be healthier because they won’t get a disease. It is very necessary to protect them from getting diseases. If anything, it is just helping, but I hope it won’t hurt the economy,”said Mr. Keiler about the new law. Some reporters interviewed Ms. Pascual, a science teacher, who commented, “It’s a good idea because the actors will be protected from diseases.” Ms. Pascual also said, “The actors should first be checked before they do their acting because some actors might be infected and diseases might spread.” Ms. Ruberte, another science teacher, was quoted as saying, “I am not aware of this new law, but if this will help stop actors from getting sick, then it is a good idea.”

Marine Wife Dead

Brittany Killgore lived a normal life in San Diego married to a fellow Marine, Lance Corporal Cory Killgore. Cory Killgore was in Afghanistan when he received a phone call on April 14 that his wife Brittany Killgore is missing. Brittany went missing a couple days after filing for divorce against Cory Killgore. The last time she was seen was April 13 with Louis Ray Perez, 45, a Camp Pendleton-based Marine, police said. Camp Pendleton-based Marine Louis Ray Perez, 45, was arrested on an unrelated gun charge, authorities said. Perez was with Killgore when she was last seen, authorities said. Once Cory Killgore found out Red Cross was planning to send him back to find his soon to be ex-wife. All her belongings were gathered by her parents and taken home. Jessica Lynn Lopez, 27, was arrested Tuesday morning in a Point Loma motel. She was taken to the hospital for medical attention before being booked into the Las Colinas women's jail in Santee late Tuesday night, according to the jail's website. She and Perez were roommates in a Fallbrook house near Killgore's residence. Perez arraigned in Vista on charges of possessing a stolen military assault rifle. He pleaded not guilty. He was ordered jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail. Perez was named as a person of interest in a homicide.
A body found near Temecula was finally identified as Brittany Killgore according to San Diego County medical examiners office but recent updates showed Killgore sent a text message to a friend the night she disappeared that said, "help." They also have not revealed what type of weapon was found but they believe it is to be the murder weapon. Officers found Perez sadomasochism websites where he listed his sexual interest. Key to Jessica Lynn Lopez’s case was found a suicide not found in her hotel room at the time of her arrest that detailed where Brittany Killgore’s body was hidden. The night Killgore went missing she was suppose to meet with friends at San Diego’s Gaslamp but she never showed. Killgore’s grandmother said Brittany was supposed to go on a cruise with Perez and an unidentified girlfriend that ended up canceling but she doesn’t know if they both still went. The whole thing is still under investigation.

Two Afghan Kids Recruited As Suicide Bombers
By: Chris Herrera, Bryan Ramos, Wendy Hernandez, and Anthony Hernandez
2/22/12
Almost six months ago, about two dozen young kids were pardoned for trying to carry out a suicide bombing. There are no reports that this was an actual terrorist attack. The bombers said that they were training at a camp Madrasa or a religious school that they say that they were paid by. The terrorist that paid them said that they will not be harmed as soon as they set off the bombs, mostly the kids need to learn what the meaning of ‘’suicide’’ is. Azizullah along with Nasibulla who have been friends for years, say that they were asked to do the job. The boys were lucky to be caught with the bombs before they detonated.
Human rights activists have issued not to use children under the age of 18 to participate in army operations. All army officials are advised to watch out for kids that are carrying anything suspicious to handle. The Taliban have admitted that they have been using kids to fight some battles for them. The pardons will begin somewhere in August. The parents felt happy, but some will never forgive what they have been doing. The president will be watching the two boys if they try to attempt to do something like this again and will give them a good education.

When a father from New Jersey began to receive reports from Mann elementary school that his son with autism was acting violently with his teachers, he was very stunned. Akian is a 10 year old boy with autism and, according to his father, is a sweet and gentle child who gets along with his three dogs. Chaifetz then began to get reports from Akian’s teachers that he was acting violently. Chaifetz had a feeling that if his son was acting violently, then something terribly wrong was going on in that classroom. When he met with Akian’s teachers, they denied that anything wrong was happening, and that they would call in a behaviorist to meet with Akian.
After meeting with the behaviorist who told Chaifetz that no matter the situation Akian did not act violently, he became suspicious. He put a digital recorder in Akian’s pocket to get any information of what was happening in Akian’s classroom. When Akian came home from school, he listened to the tape and was heartbroken. He later states in a YouTube video: “What I heard on that audio was so…disgusting, vile and an absolute disrespect and bullying of my son that happened, not by other children, but by his teacher and the aides, the people that were supposed to protect him. They were literally making my son’s life a living hell.”
In the video the teacher and aide are heard calling Akian names and making fun of him. Later on in the video when Akian is heard talking to himself (habit) the teacher, Kelly is heard telling angrily “Who are you talking to? Nobody. Knock it off!” The teacher aide, Jodi is also heard calling Akian a “bastard” when he begins to cry. Both the teacher Kelly and aide Jodi are heard telling him to “shut his mouth” and that he won’t see his father again while visiting his mother. Chaifetz states that the teachers were having inappropriate conversation while in the classrooms with the children inside. For example, Kelly is heard saying that she was so drunk and that the “wine won” when she began to throw up. Other conversations include alcohol abuse, their husbands, and complaints about their husband an themselves wanting to be sterilized, along with the conversation about lying to students’ parents.
Kelly the teacher was reassigned to another school in the district while Jodi was fired. Chaifetz is upset about this and is hoping to get Kelly and Jodi to apologize publically by setting a Facebook page and a YouTube video.

Gay Sheriff accused of threatening his ex-boyfriend

Paul Babeu
In Arizona, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who is running for Congress and who served in the military, was accused of threatening a supposed ex-lover, named “Jose.” He acknowledged that he had a gay “relationship” with Jose, a Mexican immigrant. Jose accused Paul of threatening to deport him after he refused to sign an agreement that he won’t say anything about their “romantic involvement.” On Saturday, Paul said, “absolutely, completely false, except for the issues that refer to me as being gay. Because that’s the truth. I am gay.”
During an interview with a Virgil Middle School student, Eugene Rhee said, “I think that he should be himself and not deport him.” Yeho Lee says, “It’s messed up, because it’s like deporting your own relatives.” Rosa Lemus said, “We should accept a gay sheriff because we're all the same.” Lastly, Diana Zelaya exclaimed, “Fire the sheriff, because he threatened to deport his own boyfriend.”
In conclusion, people shouldn’t judge people by their sexuality, but by their personality and work. If it turns out to be true that the Sheriff threatened to deport his ex-lover because he refused to sign the agreement, then that is not the kind of person that the Tiger's Roar staff would support being a part of Congress.

Rubber Chicken Sent On Space Mission
By Esther Gonzalez Rios P1
Camilla, a rubber chicken, was sent to space on a mission. Dr. Tony Phillip’s calculus class is conducting an “astrobiology project” (phys.org). The rubber chicken was originally used to “encourage girls to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math careers” (jalopnik.com). Currently, Camilla was sent to space after the solar storms as a project of a calculus class in Bishop, California.
The mission for Camilla was to measure the energy of the solar storm on March 10, 2012. Camilla actually went to space twice: on March 3, 2012 and March 10, 2012. “where temperatures (-40 to -60 C) and air pressures (1% sea level) are akin to those on the planet Mars”(phys.org). On the first trip, Camilla flew up to the sky on a calm day and was accompanied by “four cameras, a cryogenic thermometer, and two GPS trackers.”(phys.org), insects, all of whom died, and sunflower seeds that were planted right after being found in the Inyo Mountains. Then, on the second trip, Camilla was sent during the solar storm to see the difference of energy released before and during the storm. She reached the stratosphere, at 120,000 feet. The solar storm charged particles depositing a sufficient amount of heat during those three days that it could have powered all of New York for 2 years. The rest of the data collected by the student has not been released and the returning seeds are being waited for.

City Attorney Visits Virgil

February 21,2012
On Thursday February 16th, 2012 the city's attorney will be coming to Virgil Middle School. Kristen Byrdsong, the City Attorney, will be talking to parents and students about their attendance and how they can improve in coming to school on time. Many students decide to miss school to hang out with friends, but they are not aware that there are consequences if they decide to miss school a lot.
The Tiger's Roar had an interview with the PSA counselor, Ms. Lopez, and asked her about the importance of good attendance. She answered,”The importance of attendance is that good attendance will help you learn a lot more than poor attendance and in the future, most high schools look at your attendance records and your behavior. There will be a CDA (City District Attorney) involved to see what’s going on. If students still continue missing school, then there will be a fine of up to 2,500 dollars and parents will be going to jail for up to two years for truancy.”
Attending school every day is very important for a student’s life. Too many absences can lead to bad grades, not understanding lessons, and a bad future for the students.

The hologram reincarnated Tupac onstage that rapped and danced along with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. He performed only “Hail Mary” and “2 of Americaz Most Wanted” before he vanished into thin air. There were some rumors saying that the Tupac hologram would be going on tour. Dr. Dre cleared up that rumor by explaining that the hologram was made specifically for Coachella only.

Virgil Middle School Dance Cancelled
By: Theresa Aguilar, Jenesis Hidalgo, and Luz Perez
February 17,2012
Some students expected that there was going to be a dance on Valentine’s Day, however it was cancelled. Why was it cancelled? According to the head of leadership, Ms.Chavez, they didn’t promote the dance properly and not a lot of students bought the tickets. The tickets were sold for $.50 cents each at the student store. Each student who bought one will be able to get a refund of their money.
The St. Patrick’s Day dance will be held on March 16 in the gym during lunch. About refreshments, Ms. Chavez said, “We’re not sure yet, but it’s a great idea!” Concerning the kind of music that is going to be played, she said that they are, “not prepared, but we will put songs that we have.”
VMS students gave their opinions about the dance being cancelled too. Eugene Rhee said, “I really didn’t care, but I didn’t think it would be cancelled.” Cynthia Moreno says, “I don’t really care, so I’m not going.”

Ugandan Prime Minister Responds To "Kony 2012" video
By: Kaitlin Reyes, Camille Samonte, Samantha Kasingsing, and Nicole Cirineo
Lately, a YouTube video called “Kony 2012” went viral and was the talk of the town as it trended worldwide on Twitter and received much attention from various people including artists such as Ryan Seacrest, George Clooney, and Rihanna. It talks about the “invisible children” in Uganda and how they lost their lives and were abused by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Young boys were turned into child-soldiers, learning how to kill those who opposed Kony and the LRA while young girls were captured and used as sex slaves. An estimated 30,000 children, from ages 5 to 18, were abducted/ taken away, from their families because of the LRA.
The main goal of the video was to make Kony, the leader LRA, famous by letting the world know of his wrong doings. Jason Russell, the film maker, wanted to help the children captured by Kony, and try to convince the U.S congress to help, but was denied since it didn’t affect the United States’ financial and national stability. That is when he turned toward the internet for help. From there, he counted on the people to make a difference by signing petitions, and trying to persuade the U.S military to capture Kony. In about six days, the video has already earned more than 100,000,000 views.
However, on March 17, 2012, Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi responded on the “Kony 2012” video by posting a video of his own on YouTube. In the video, he states “One point made in the KONY 2012 video is undeniable—Joseph Kony is truly an evil [man]. He has been responsible for the death and mutilation of tens of thousands of people, most of whom were children.” However, he makes it known that, “The KONY 2012 campaign fails to make one crucial point clear—Joseph Kony is not in Uganda…Uganda People’s Defense Forces defeated the LRA in Uganda in 2006.”
“I must correct the mistaken impression created by the KONY 2012 video. Uganda is not in conflict. Uganda is a modern, developing country, which enjoys peace, stability and security. Only a couple of months ago, Lonely Planet declared Uganda as the best country in the world to visit in 2012,” He adds. Mbabazi ends the video by saying “Come and see Uganda for yourself. You will find a very different place to that portrayed by Invisible Children.”
In addition to his video, he has also been reaching out to some celebrities who helped make the “Kony 2012” video so popular by tweeting them in his personal Twitter account, letting them know that Kony is not in Uganda anymore and inviting them to visit and see Uganda for themselves.

Ohio Pays Students to Increase Attendance Rate and Participation

A High School near Cincinnati, Ohio will begin paying students this week as a part of an experiment to get more students to attend to class. The principal said that students who are on time everyday and show they’re working hard in their studies will receive Visa gift cards. According to news websites, seniors will receive $25 worth and younger students will be given $10 worth of money. According to the school principal named Ramone Davenport, after researching many ways to increase productivity in school, this was the best way. Although principal Davenport just introduced this new system, he stated, “When I walked around my building, every single student was engaged, the teacher was engaged and it was kind of almost like magic.”
In discussing the money they are using from community funds, he said, “Whatever it takes to get those kids in school, we’re willing to do that.” After further research was done, reporters found out that there are multiple high schools in the US that are already using this system or are willing to do try it. For example, a school in Chelsea Massachusetts gives students $25 for every quarter of school they attend to every day. In addition, they receive $25 extra if they manage to attend to school every day of the school year. “In Hartford last year, 9-year-old Fernando Vazquez won a raffle for students with perfect attendance and was given the choice of a new Saturn Ion or $10,000. At Old-ham County High School in Buckner, Kentucky, Krystal Brooks who is 19, won a canary yellow Ford Mustang. In Temecula, California, the school district prizes can include iPods, DVD players and a trip to Disneyland.”
When we interviewed a former student named Marybeth Rauls, she stated, “I wish we had a school like this because it would promote a better environment, more reasons for why to do your best in school, and a good reason for why to attend every day. Another student interviewed commented, “This idea is great, however I do wonder why schools in California do not try to put in experiment this method. I am pretty sure that kids in California would respond very well to this method."

Helium Shortage will affect the Valentine Balloons

Valentine's Day is a day when couples give love and presents to each other. This year there is a problem with a national helium shortage. Since the United States is losing helium, the prices on balloons are getting expensive, so guys would rather buy a bouquet of roses rather than a twelve dollar balloon.
Helium comes from natural gas, but natural gas is also used at home for hot showers and cooking. Some people say that balloons are given to girls to express LOVE, but a faculty staff member at Virgil Middle School said that it’s only a waste of helium, which we need for the future.
Watch the video below to see her Dina's response to the helium shortage.
Pink Slime in Meat
By:Kaitlin Reyes, Camille Samonte, Nicole Cirineo and Samantha Kasingsing
From the foods found in fast-food restaurants, to those found in school lunches, pink slime is found in most meat products we eat (specifically in beef). A lot of people didn’t know about it, until the media exposed the contents found in the meat earlier this year (2012). Pink slime is a substance found in ground beef that includes ammonium hydroxide. The pink slime is put in the ground beef
This meat doesn’t cost as much as other premium meats and is made of meat trimmings from previous meat products. When processing the meat, it is then exposed to a “puff of ammonium hydroxide gas to kill the bacteria, which can be harmful such as E.coli and salmonella.”(http://yourlife.usatoday.com/health/story/2012-03-15/Schools-will-get-to-optout-of-pink-slime-beef/53544636/1).
People believe that the condition of the food is “safe” but that is still yet to be determined. In fact, McDonalds is one of the companies that have been using it as additives for their meat. On February 2012, however, the corporation announced that it will discontinue using the controversial meat in their burgers. In an article on (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/02/01/mcdonalds-announces-end-to-pink-slime-in-burgers/), the company is stated as saying “At McDonald’s, the quality and safety of the food we serve our customers is a top priority…At the beginning of 2011; we made a decision to discontinue the use of ammonia-treated beef in our hamburgers. This product has been out of our supply chain since August of last year. This decision was a result of our efforts to align our global standards for how we source beef around the world.” Burger King and Taco Bell have also stopped adding the boneless beef trimmings in their food.
Recently, USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) was reported ordering seven million pounds of pink slime to serve to students, outraging many people across the United States. When we interviewed some students, a Virgil Middle School InLa 8th grader, Chan-Ho Choi, said that “I think they shouldn’t be serving pink slime because it is unhealthy for students.” Elyne Grace Manalac, also a Virgil Middle School InLa 8th grader, said “The schools shouldn’t be serving that because it might make students get sick and the schools might get sued which isn’t going to help them save money.”

Cancellation of the Valentine’s Dance
By: Jae Wook Choi, Esther Gonzalez, and Ryan Pizarro
Valentine’s Day Dance in Virgil Middle School was about to take action but was canceled. In result, students didn’t know why it was canceled. This was planned by Mr. Goin and Ms. Chavez. Students would have had a chance to find love~ during the dance so some might have been looking forward to it. Also, this would have been the last dance for the 8th graders.
Unfortunately, only 6 students were interested in going to the dance. Reporters interviewed Mr.Goin and he said, “The dance was canceled because there was no interest.” He also said, “The dance was an idea from the leadership group. Mr.Goin also commented that the dance wasn’t such a good idea because if only 6 people went, it would be worth having it. A reporter asked Mr.Goin, “Do you think the dance attracted the students?” He replied, “Only the 6 people that bought the tickets.”
In conclusion, if more people went to the dance, it wouldn’t have been canceled. Since there were only 6 people that were interested, they have to refund the tickets to the students. The dance wasn’t good as the leadership group expected to be. Maybe next dance would be more successful.

A Passenger Commandeer a Bus
By: Viviana Salto, Arly Santizo, and Diana Zelaya

A local bus driver is being hailed as a hero for fighting off a belligent passenger who tried to commandeer the bus while on the 1-5 freeway in Irvine. The passenger, Robert Galantine tried to commandeer the bus because he missed his stop and wanted to get off. When the bus driver told him he wasn’t supposed to get off, Robert got upset or mad and tried to steer the bus, at least twice from the carpool lane into the adjacent traffic lane. No passengers were injured, but the bus radio was broken in the frenzy. He is supposed to pay adept of $2,000 or more because there were some kids inside the bus.
We interviewed some local Virgil middle school students and asked them these questions what do you think about the belligerent passenger who commandeer the bus? And how would you feel if you were inside that bus? Jenesis said, “I think it’s stupid and that the passenger shouldn’t be doing that.” Gaby said, “I think it’s stupid because he could have killed himself and the rest of the people in the bus.” They both said that they would feel scared if they were inside the bus.

No Lost Love between Students and Staff as Valentine's Dance Cancelled
By Karen Ruiz, Danielle Calzado, Emily Portillo, and Elixed Nava
Period 6
Valentine’s Day is usually celebrated every year in February 14, 2012 mostly in the west. Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated with the people or person you love. During Valentine’s Day, people give each other gifts like flowers (red roses), teddy bears, letters, and chocolates. At Virgil Middle School, a dance was going to happen, but unfortunately it was canceled.
We interviewed Mr. Keiler about the Valentine’s Dance and what he thinks about it:
Questions:
1. What would you do for Valentine’s Day
2. Which Valentine’s was the most memorable for you?
3. Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
4. Is it important for you?
5. Do you think everyone should celebrate Valentine’s Day?
6. If you were a student and the dance was cancelled, what would you do or think? Would you still tell the person you like them?
Answers:
1. His answer was he has gone out to special dinners.
2. The most memorable was the first I spent with is my wife, at a nice Italian restaurant.
3. Every year I celebrate Valentine’s Day
4. I would say it’s nice to be able to show how you care for people on a specific day.
5. Only if they want to.
6. They didn’t sell enough tickets. The overall tickets sold were six. You don’t need a dance to prove to someone that you love them. I would be disappointed because I love to dance.

On March 5, 2012, three people were charged with helping a convicted killer and robber, Anthony Garcia, twenty-six years old cash in checks worth $20,000. They are: Juan Garcia age 47, Sandra Jaimenez age 45, and Cynthia Limas age 25.
Garcia got caught when “The Sheriff's Department had photographed Garcia's tattoo after picking him up during a routine traffic stop on suspicion of driving with a suspended license (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-killer-unemployment-20120305,0,202451.story)” Later on, a detective was stunned to see that the tattoo showed an accurate scene of a 2004 unanswered murder outside a Pico Rivera liquor store. So after the discovery, he was charged with murder.
In an article in the New York Times, Capt. Mike Parker, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department said, "Investigators determined that ... Garcia was having family members and friends fraudulently obtain and cash biweekly unemployment insurance benefit checks.” The unemployment money was used to benefit a criminal gang. Parker also adds "It's pretty appalling when you think about somebody sitting in jail collecting unemployment," He did not say whether criminal charges would be added to Anthony Garcia.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooler stated that there is a, “lack” of effective methods to detect and stop bogus plans. “He also states that “There’s no wonder the state has financial difficulties,” and that tax payers are basically paying to keep criminals away, and giving them food and housing.

San Francisco Earthquakes

March 12, 2012
In San Francisco last week two earthquakes in a row hit the Bay Area, but there are no reports of serious damage or injury. The 2.9 quake struck at 5:33am on Monday. Eight seconds later, a 4.0 quake continued the shaking.
A friend named Nicole has a brother in San Francisco and he has given the Tiger’s Roar reports about earthquake. Nicole’s brother said that he didn’t really feel the earthquake since it was in the morning. Nicole’s brother didn’t see that much damage in the city of San Francisco.
The big news hit Los Angeles and now many people are alarmed. Many people are not ready if any earthquake comes this way. They have to be fully prepared because an earthquake might hit us and it could damage buildings or other things that are dangerous so we can have to be prepared with needs. San Francisco is 347.16 miles near Los Angeles, but hopefully it wont hit LA.

The Hana Hwang Story

Per. 6
Hana Hwang is an 8th grader at Virgil Middle School. She suffers from a condition called Progeria, a rare genetic condition that produces rapid aging in children. Usually it is not passed down through families. It is rarely seen in more than one child in a family.
Hana is admired by many students because of her handling of her sickness. She has overcome many obstacles and faced a lot of situations. Many students see her as just another student and don’t focus on her sickness. In addition, many students wave to her to show their support for her when she is going through tough times. Lots of people see her as a role model because she faces more situations than normal students should face. Lots of students make her feel welcomed and they support her.
While Hana Hwang was in the hospital, rumors were spread on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr that she had died on February 4, 2012. They had pictures to prove this rumor. Furthermore, many people believed it, but Virgil students asked many staff members and it turned out she was alive, and ready to continue her life and come back to school.

March 5, 2012
On Thursday, a suspect identified as Shonchy Thaopraseuth, age 22, of San Bernardino, led police to a pursuit that ended in Koreatown Thursday night. “LAPD officers fired more than twenty shots at Thaopraseuth, who led them to a Shell gas station near Wilshire and Vermont after he allegedly carjacked two vehicles”(CBS Local). The fist car was stolen out a San Bernardino gas station, but then ran out of fuel. That led the suspect to steal a Saturn in Lincoln Heights.
Afterwards, he drove “erratically from the 60 Freeway through downtown Los Angeles and onto the 101 Freeway” (CBS Local). At a corner, he turned left at highland, “where Oscar preparations have streets blocked.” He then waved his gun in the air and led a long line of cups to the Shell gas station. The LAPD says they were the only ones who opened fire, but they were prompt to shoot when the suspect pointed his revolver at customers inside the gas stations convenience store.

Local student dies after school fight
By Myzell Hardnett and Luz Silva
There was a fatal school fight in Willard Elementary in Long Beach, California. It was in an alley where they determined who will get the boy. After the fight, Joanna Ramos was suffering a headache and vomiting. After school, her mother rushed her to the hospital. Meanwhile, she had stopped breathing. The doctors did CPR on her, and they tried everything to revive her. At 9pm, they pronounced her dead to the LAPD.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of Joanna Ramos’ death. It was released that the other girl hit her with a knee to the head, known as “blunt force trauma.” The two girls were trying to solve their answer by fighting, but the Local Section believes that is not the answer.
The police still didn’t make any arrests. Still many questions about the fight remain unanswered.

11 year-old girl died after a fight in Long Beach School
BY: Debora Guevara and Victoria Catarroja
3/5/2012
Eleven-year-old Joanna Ramos died from blunt force trauma after emergency surgery for a blood clot on her brain. In the elevator on the way to the operating room, Joanna's heart stopped. Doctors and nurses tried to resuscitate her, but by 9 p.m. she was dead. When Joanna got home a little before 5 p.m. Joanna reclined on a love seat near the front door and said she wanted to sleep. Her mother, Cecilia Villanueva, fearing she might have a concussion, told her not to fall asleep, and then left the room to find her medical insurance card so they could go to the hospital. When she returned, the family dog, a miniature Schnauzer mix, was standing on Joanna's chest, barking at her. Joanna had lost consciousness. That is when her mother called the ambulance.
The girl fought with her classmates over a boy. The girls already planned the fight Friday after school in the alleyway of Willard Elementary School in Long Beach. The police say that there have not been any arrests so far. One of Ramos’ friends told one of the staff that there was going to be a fight after school, but the staff didn’t pay attention to her. The Police Department said that the concussion came from a punch or knee to the girl's head.
We interviewed Ms. Flores about this article. She said that, "the girls fought for a boy and it’s really dumb.” She also said that, “If I was there, I would have separated them up.” She added, “It wasn’t fair that the girl died, because the staff from the school knew that there was going to be a fight afterschool.” Flores also said, “If I had my daughter that fought at school, I would go to the counselor or the coordinators. My opinion about this is that it is really not good.”

Baby’s Body Found Dumped in Strawberry Field

On May 21st a baby’s body was found dumped in a strawberry field. The body was found about 9:30 a.m. Detectives in Ventura County were trying to determine why the body of a newborn was dumped in a strawberry field. The man who found the body, Gabriel Ortiz, says a placenta was also found nearby, so he believes the baby was born at the strawberry field. “It’s scary,” said Gabriel Ortiz.
Detectives believe the body was dumped in the field between Sunday night and early Monday morning. Ventura Country sheriff said the mother could have left the infant at a fire station or hospital. Investigators remained Monday afternoon at the scene in Nyeland Acres. In January 2010, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned but alive in a garden outside Ventura home. In 2009, a 30-minute-old baby was left with Ventura Country firefighters in Oak View under the safe surrender Baby law.

Toxins Found Under Orange County Buildings Causing Birth Defects and Cancer
By: Samantha Kasingsing, Kaitlin Reyes, Camille Samonte, and Nicole Cirineo

On February 28, 2012, at Orange County under a two story building, poisonous chemical toxic used for dry cleaning and degreasing equipment were located. This Orange County building was already the subject of two lawsuits, according to officials. This building was beforehand used for manufacturing oil drill equipments. Basically, the toxic that is being produced causes birth defects, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Therefore, the two story building had to have a soil testing after so many years.
The toxic waste found beneath an orange county building affected many workers. During the weekend, the soil was tested around the area, which has over 500 workers including those working in the Sheriff’s Department and Social Services. These helped former workers, whose time being there, have caused birth defects, diseases, and even cancer. One of the harmful toxics found beneath the building are called Tetrachloroethylene, a colorless, non-flammable, liquid. This was found in an area of dirt, five feet below 10 feet wide.
Many of the workers in the building have been affected by the dangerous chemicals found in the building. These include Sarah Kirk, 39 years old, who quit the Social Service Agency last summer after 11 years of working there. In an interview, she said "I just no longer had faith that they would act in my best interests and my co-workers' best interests.” This is due to “the poor health of her son, who was born in 2002. He suffers from numerous health issues, including neurological defects, epilepsy and total body cerebral palsy. He cannot see, hear, speak or feed himself and is in his wheelchair for most of the day. He requires one-on-one supervision at all times (http://www.latimes.com/)” She remembered feeling baffled about the condition of his son even though she was careful during her first pregnancy. Luisa Fernandez-Vasquez, 57 years old and a senior social worker for 28 years, worked at the building but retired after she suffered severe migraines and was pronounced to have a rare bone cancer called multiple myeloma. When asked about the testing that’s taking place in the building, she said "I think it should have been done a long time ago… Nothing is going to give me my health back."
When we asked how some of these students felt, and what what be of them if they were in the situation. Adriana Rojo, a 7th grade InLA student said, "If i was in that situation, i would probably leave or quit and go somewhere else because its better than to risk your life having cancer." Maria Alvarado, a 7th grade AGLA student said, "I would leave because i wouldn't risk it."
"I would probably leave because I wouldn't want to risk my life. Also i would protest." replied Roxanne and Bianca, 6th grade InLA." If the school were to be toxicated, I probably wouldn't come to the school, i wouldn't risk getting cancer. Therefore, i would go to a different school due to educational purposes." said Cindy Martinez, an 8th grade InLa student. Finally, another student, an 6th grade AGLA student, Jonathan Suarez said, " I would feel really desperate to get out of the place. I would also probably move and find a different place."

For the past few weeks a lot of cases such as death of children’s causing by cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a similar to other types of bulling such as teasing, tormenting, threatening, harassing or humiliating but this kind of bullying happens only online and through mobile devices.
Cyber bullying Research Center calculates how much kids were bullied and they said that 40% of kids in the U.S. have been bullied on the Internet or even devices. In my opinion it's not always easy to know how and when to step in as a parent. For beginners, children’s tend to use technology differently than we do. Kids and teens today have started playing games online and sending texts on their cell phones at an early age, and most teens have smart phones that keep them constantly connected to the Internet. Many children are logged on to Face book and chatting or sending text messages to their friends all day. Even sending email or leaving a voice mail seems "so old school" to them. Their knowledge of the digital world can be intimidating, but if parents stay involved in their kids online world, just as you do in their real world. They can help them and protect their kids from online dangers.

Deadly School Fight
By: Ashley Viera
An 11year old girl was killed February24, 2012. She was killed at the Long Beach Elementary School. At least half-dozen classmates watched two girls fight last Friday near their Long Beach elementary school in a clash that left 11-year-old Joanna Ramos dead. They said the fight itself lasted only a minute and that no weapons were used.
Ramos felt ill after the fight and died hours later at a local hospital. Officials said she suffered blunt-force trauma to the head. The coroner's office labeled her death a homicide, but no arrests have been made. Family members and friends said the girls were fighting over a boy. Officials said they had no idea what the outcome of their investigation might be, or whether criminal charges are warranted. Law enforcement sources said officers will interview students, teachers and parents, and will look at Joanna's medical history to determine if the fight might have aggravated an existing condition.
Joanna's family had moved to Long Beach from Hawaiian Gardens in December 2010. A new face in a working-class community a mile from the tonier shoreline neighborhoods, Joanna was occasionally picked on at school. There were suggestions that she had been bullied on occasion, but she was a happy child for the most part -"she didn’t like fighting," Villanueva her mom said.
Mr. J. said that is it is not good and posed an important question back to this reporter, "Why would you fight over a boy that can ruin your life?"

Solar Eclipse
June 8, 2012
By: Koren Oliva
A solar eclipse is when the moon goes in front of the sun and causes the sun do dim down its when a ring of sunlight as the new moon passes between Earth and the Sun. Recently there was a solar eclipse that happened on Sunday May 20, 2012. It was around 6:30 and ended around 7:00. A lot of people got together to watch this eclipse because it only happens once in 10 years since it was annular solar eclipse. It could be dangerous by looking at it without any protection in the eye. The solar eclipse was visible in Reno, Nevada, the Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lubbock, Texas, San Francisco, Sacramento, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Denver.
According to Rosa Lemus the solar eclipses are very unique and fascinating and Isis Santos said that she thinks the solar eclipses are cool. I think that it is interesting how the sun and moon can pass by each other and create a different shade in the sky. The solar eclipse will not be shown for about another 10 years. The annular solar eclipses are very rare.

Around the world there are millions of drinks. There are drinks that our found in Los Angeles. Common drinks we share are horchata, pina coloada, jamaica, and so many more. The most common drink from Salvador is Kolashapman. The drink is sweet yet fizzy. The drink taste like a bubblegum flavor and it also has a very sweet and also it has a very nice smell. And the drink is found in mostly all Salvadorian restaurants and can be found in Mexican places. Guatemala’s common drink is jamaica. The color is sword of burgundy, purplish, violet, and a magenta color. The drink can be hand made, or machine made. The juice actually comes from a flower. The flower is smashed and it goes through a process which turns the flower into a powder, which helps make the drink easier. The taste is somewhat sour but it is also somewhat sweet. A common Mexican drink is horchata. Horchata is a drink that requires a brown powder. Some people have different ways of making it. Some make it traditionally, or others make it their own way. For example, some people add hazelnut. Some horchatas have different color by how they are made like some are white and others are like a very light brown. Last but not least, Nicaragua’s common drink is chichi de maiz. This drink is flavored with banana or vanilla flavors. The drink is served very cold and it is made by soaking the corn in the water over night, and they add red food coloring. Also, lots and lots of sugar and water are added to the drink.

American Idol; Jessica Sanchez vs. Phillip Phillips

The American Idol finale took place here in L.A. at the red carpet. It was a Tuesday night. Two of the finalists were Jessica Sanchez, and Phillip Phillips. Even Though the show isn’t close to ending, people assumed Phillip Phillips is going be the winner. Jessica Sanchez didn’t let that get to her, and she still went along with her singing. Sanchez sang “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” with the original “Dream girls” star Jennifer Holiday. Phillips said that the duet with Sanchez and Holiday was his favorite part of the finale. And in the end of the two hour show the winner was . . . . Phillip Phillips. Even though Phillips won the season 11 of American Idol, Jennifer Lopez, and Ryan Seacrest told Jessica that she will still have an album recording. Even though Sanchez lost her mom was still proud of what she achieved.

Missing Woman Found Dead at Angeles Forest Highway
By: Joselyn Reyes, Nathaly Roman, and Cristina Hernandez
Feb. 29, 2012
On Sunday, an unidentified woman was reported missing. A day later, she was found dead after her car was located over the side of the steep Angeles Forest Highway. She was found dead at the scene of the crash about 8am. A helicopter was used by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies to “trace the route and found a crashed vehicle that matched witnesses’ descriptions” (LA Times).
The rescuers that were lowered to the scene confirmed her death. “Sheriff’s Lt. Angela Shepherd tells the Los Angeles Times that the car went over the side at Mt. Gleason Road about 14 mi. north of Angeles Forest Highway.” This case is still being investigated, but “Shepherd says it was an accident” (SanLuisObispo.com The Tribune).

Facebook Stock Rises After Creating Its First IPO On Wall Street

This past
week, Facebook made its first IPO on Wall Street. AN IPO is an initial public
offering through which a privately held company issues shares of stock to the
public for the first time. An IPO transforms a small business from a privately owned
company which is a small business from a privately owned and operated entity
into one that is owned by public stockholders. Facebook raised the roof on wall
street in more ways than one as it turned out- with it’s initial public
offering which had a target evaluation on the social media giant as high as 104
million. Because of a technical delay at Nasdaq, the stock opening took place
at 11:30 an EDT on Friday May 18th instead of 11am, with an opening
price of $30 per share, and the ticker symbol was FB. The price actually opened
at 42.05 a share after investors immediately jumped in with the ceremonial 100
share lot. An analyst at Morgan Stanley began advising clients several times
that Facebook profits would probably be lower than estimated before. The fact
that Morgan Stanley is an analyst made it more believable that his analysis
were fact based and would happen at a certain time.
At just about the same time, other analysts working for banks came to the conclusion that their earning estimations had lowered greatly. The investors who received and took note of these warnings may have saved lots of money. As many investors now know all too well, the value of Facebook stock rose briefly on its first day and has since plunged 16 percent from its original price.

Solar Eclipse 2012 after eighteen years
By:Prottasha Khan
05/31/12
After eighteen years, there was a solar eclipse on this Sunday, 5/20/12 from about 5:28 p.m. to 6:38 p.m. Many people headed to the Griffith observatory to this rare event. The observatory prepared some extra free telescopes and binoculars for people in Los Angeles. The Griffith observatory also sold solar eclipse glasses. The solar eclipse glasses were safety from the sun because during the solar eclipse if somebody looks at the sun directly, the sun will damage his/her eyes forever. The last accurate information of solar eclipse was collected in 1992.
The Sunday Solar eclipse covered about 85% of the sun's diameter, leaving behind a very skinny C-shaped sun. The moon was a little more than 250,000 mile away. According to the weather news, there was a chance of partly cloudy on Sunday evening. Last time in 1992, during the solar eclipse Los Angeles sky was covered with clouds of an arriving winter storm, which surprised most of the people. In 1992 Solar eclipse, fifteen thousand people gathered in the Griffith observatory to see this amazing event. The Sunday solar eclipse was an annular eclipse because it looked like “ring of fire” and the other one is called total eclipse because it occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the Sun to block it entirely. People have question about why there annular eclipse instead of total eclipse. It is because the moon, constant in size as it may appear to us here on Earth; it doesn’t orbit around the Earth in a perfect circle. It orbits in an elliptical path.
Almost all the national park at the west are preparing for the solar eclipse. Some places like Joshua Tree National Park had a presentation on solar eclipse. During the solar eclipse a “ring of fire,” (called the annular path) will appear as the moon passes in front of the sun. According to the prediction of scientists the next time Los Angeles will see the solar eclipse on 2017.

Eighteen year old, Matt Hoff, hasn’t been seen since his 60-day jail term for theft three days ago. His family says he was off his anti-psychotic medication. Matt Hoff hasn’t contacted his family since then. Jennifer Hoff, Matt Hoff’s mother, has appealed to Facebook by using a page to find her son. “Matt Hoff has exhibited erratic behavior since he was 5”, his mother said. “Hoff had been in custodial treatment for severe mental illness for most of his adolescence and was ‘medically compliant’ when he returned to California nine months ago from a Texas facility after he turned 18”, his mother said.
“Orange County mental health authorities can't offer him the services he needs because they are available only to adults whose behavior has been deemed dangerous to others”, Jennifer Hoff said. "There's nothing we can do to keep him safe," she said. "He's off his meds now and doesn't trust us anymore." Hoff's disappearance after his release from jail is reminiscent of the Mitrice Richardson case in Los Angeles County. Richardson, an emotionally troubled 24-year-old arrested in Malibu after failing to pay an $89 restaurant bill, was released from the Malibu/Lost Hills jail in 2009 after midnight without her car, wallet or cellphone. Her remains were found a year later in a remote Malibu Canyon ravine.
Matt Hoff had to live in the streets for several weeks because he was kicked out of the home he had to stay in. When he was arrested and held for two months for taking things from a neighbor's car, jailers refused the anti-psychotic medications she brought for her son and his condition escalated to full-blown psychosis, she said. The family has posted an appeal on Facebook asking anyone who has seen Matt Hoff to contact his parents, Jennifer and Gary Hoff, at (714) 759-4357, or the Orange County Department of Behavioral Health at (714) 517-6353. A mental health specialist who answered the department phone said an assessment team member would be dispatched with police to investigate any reports of the teen's whereabouts.

Hollywood Fire and Shooting

February 27, 2011
Recently at East Hollywood on February 16, 2012, a shooting and fire occurred in a local house. The house was nearly turned to charred and rumble in just under two hours. During this event, two people were found dead while three others were seriously wounded and sent to the hospital. Their condition is still unknown. After the fire there has been a report that one person survived the blaze. This was at a single-family home, and the fire stood ablaze for 21/2 hours. Investigators said that the chances of surviving the blaze are “absolute zero.”
There were a total of about 130 firefighters in the scene, and a SWAT team where it occurred. In addition, the home was already smoking up by the time the firefighters came. The SWAT team waited until the fire went out, as they entered the house, they found two people dead. The two people dead were one of the victims, and one of the shooters, around their 30’s. The fire began at a detached garage at the rear of the home. Police believed that the shooter was related to the victim, and was “domestically motivated.”
When we asked a couple of students about the fire, they happened to live near the fire at the time. We asked Braulio, an InLA 8th grader, how he felt about the fire and he responded, “That was really shocking despite the fact I lived near there, a family member of mine was quite scared.” In addition, another student a few blocks away from the fire. Jessica Carreon, an InLA 8th grader exclaimed, “That was REALLY freaky, it was just horrible. I need to watch out for myself since a shooter is on the loose.” Samantha Kasingsing’s little brother is currently attending Harvard Elementary, where the school had a lockdown. She said, “It’s dangerous that there might be a shooter roaming the area.”

SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Launches Toward International Space Center
By: Joselyn Reyes
June 8, 2012
The Falcon 9 rocket was
launched Tuesday at 3:44 am from Cape Canaveral. The Falcon 9 carries a capsule
packed with 1,200 pounds of food and supplies for the space station crew.
SpaceX, a Southern California- based company, created the Falcon 9. “It’s just
indescribable. It’s just all the hard work we did all this time. Just to see
the results and everybody else’s, it’s just unbelievable,” said SpaceX engineer
Mariam Safaryan.
The launch on Tuesday was the second attempt. “The launch was aborted just a half second before liftoff on Saturday because of a bad engine valve, which has since been replaced,” (ABC 7). “The real test is on Thursday when the SpaceX capsule reaches the vicinity of the space station. It will begin practice maneuvers to dock,” (ABC 7). If everything goes as planned, the docking occurs on Friday. NASA and SpaceX officials say that the flight is just a test flight so they can learn from it if something goes wrong.

People Sue Facebook for Online Tracking
By: Kaitlin Reyes
5/31/12
Facebook, created by Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the top sites people use for socializing among family, friends, and even strangers. This is where people update their statuses and chat with each other. However, there has been many cases where Facebook is being blamed for, even sued, for the violations including privacy and things within the website that isn’t working properly. One case in particular is the event when Facebook is getting sued for privacy violations.
The recent event, having to do with a particular social networking site, involved Facebook owing its users fifteen million dollars for violating an online privacy contract with the web. The cost of this may go up, as people, or Facebook itself continue to do what they are doing. It is assumed that once a person logs off the website, Facebook tracks down its users and follows them. This, supposedly, violates the U.S Wiretrap Act, which states, “statutory damages of the greater of $100 per violation per day, up to $10,000, per Facebook user.” In my interpretation, the quote means that for every violation a user makes, it costs Facebook as much as $100, or to specify, up to $10,000 per user.
There has been a lawsuit filed, including 21 different cases, which is combined, across the United States that involves Facebook tracking down their users even though they have logged out. Previously, Facebook sold stock with several countries such as Europe, but was carefully overlooked by them and how the website protects its users. Little things such as tagging photos can cost the company some money due to privacy violations. In previous years, Facebook has already been dealing with many lawsuits, so it is no surprise to them owing the victims money.

Dangerous Lead Amounts for Children
By:Victoria Catarroja, Debora Guevara, and Odalys Ramos
Even though the goverment of California has tried to protect from lead poisoning in the last twenty years, their still finding California kids every year. The problem is the worst with old apartment buildings with old paint in them. There are also lead problems found on the window frames and doors in families' apartments. The laws have been banning lead from paint and other products. 21,692 children in California are getting affected with the lead problem.
Exposure to small levels of lead may be damaging to children’s kidneys and other organs. A report published in January in Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at some records of 769 healthy youths, ages 12 to 20 with average blood levels of 1.5 micrograms per deciliter. This lead in high doses is linked to chronic kidney damage. This has really affected the children with 2.9 micrograms because their kidneys are really badly damaged.
The lead can be exposed from old paint, contaminated soil, and drinking water. The lead exposure can affect, "cognitive ability and behavior." Some studies have found that children with, "elevated blood lead levels have problems such as hyperactivity, attention dysfunctions, aggression, and lowered IQ." The concern about the effect of lead on children has grown among researchers and physicians. Although parental education on potential lead hazards and such as in cleaning products for homes are provided when children are found with high lead levels.

Drug Deaths
by Myzell Hardnett
2-22-12
People all over the world are dying because of drug overdoses. Drug overdoses killed more than 33,000 people in this country in 2005 according to the Center For Disease Control (CDC). A bunch of parents and children died by an overdose of drugs last month. “In fact, prescription drugs cause most of the more than 26,000 fatal overdoses each year, says Leonard Paulozzi of the CDC.”
A local husband named Ray Kiomusko’s wife Susan Kilmusko is addicted to drugs. Susan’s son Austin Kilmusko overdosed with the drugs that his mother had. Their son died by the overdose in January.
People would do anything to calm themselves by getting drugs. Kiomusko said, “He ran amuck in the city, causing ruckus, breaking laws, stealing.” He recalled, “It’s a path that no one should take, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy! There are a lot people that have a problem with drug abuse or buying the deadly drug.”
The Local Page thinks that people should stop using drugs. Abusing drugs ruins people’s lives. Michael Jackson died by drugs that he received from his doctor. Whitney Houston died by drugs too.
Daniel Giron said, “drugs are very bad.” Jackie Pinto says that they are “nasty.” The Local Community Desk thinks that drug overdoses are bad for the United States of America.

During a long period of time many years ago, Wesley Shermantine and Lorenz Herzong, who have been called “Speed Freak Killers,” went on a killing rampage. They are called “”Speed Freak Killers” for a methamphetamine-fueled killing spree that had as many as 15 victims” (KMPH Fox 26). Police and other investigators were sent to look for victims remains. They found several remains of different people using the “Speed Freak Killers“ maps. “Speed Freak Killers” use maps in order to plan their next murder attack. “Shermantine and his partner, Loren Herzog, are suspected of serial murders in decades past” (Merced Sun-Star).
Shermantine, who is on death row, got paid $33,000 in order for him to say where some of the bodies where hidden. Although he already has been getting paid, he wont tell where his partner, Lorenz Herzog, who committed suicide after finding out that Shermantine was cooperating with authorities, hid the other bodies. However, he will tell the authorities where the other bodies are for more money. As a result, police officers have found several remains in a short period of time and are still on the search for more.

Ballerina Dies After Trying To Save a Possum

February 17, 2012
"I was born with everything that said I wouldn't be a dancer. Every surgeon who sees my X-rays says, 'You can't dance.' But I have all my life. Some doctors told me that, if I hadn't danced, I'd have been a cripple." These were some of the words Zina Bethune, a former dancer, choreographer, and actress, told The Los Angeles Times in 1985.
Zina Bethune was a very notorious ballet dancer and a long-time teacher of disabled children. “The native New Yorker was a regular on the daytime soaps Guiding Light, Love of Life and Santa Barbara, she also guest starred on The Judy Garland Show and Broadway in Grand Hotel and appeared in such other series as Naked City, Route 66, Emergency!, Police Story and as a ballet teacher in Party of Five (Hollywoodreporter.com)” Bethune also founded Theatre Bethune, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, California- and Infinite Dreams, a dance and performance program for children with disabilities. The program has had more than 8,000 participants since it was found in 1982.
On Sunday, February 12, 2012, Ms.Bethune was driving to Griffith Park, when she saw a wounded animal. She left her car running on the side of the street of Forest Lawn Drive, and “walked into the road, then was struck by a car that was traveling in the opposite direction, said Sgt. Jeffrey Siggers of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.” (LATimes.com) The impact of the car threw her to the other side of the street where she was run over by a second vehicle and dragged about 600 feet on the road. Bethune suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators haven’t yet found the driver of the second car. Police officers interviewed several drivers who stopped at the scene and were looking at the possibility that the incident was a hit-and-run. As of now, the police department encourages “anyone with information is asked to call Dets. Felix Padilla or Josephine Mapson at (213) 972-1825, or the watch commander at (213) 972-1853.”
We interviewed students and asked them about their opinions/ feelings about this event. Esther Sanchez, an InLa 8th grader, responded “It’s really sad that she died that way, she helped organize organizations for disabled children, and how she even tried helping a “wounded” animal. Irene Pineda agreed and said, “It was shocking, but at least she was trying to help the animal, but really sad she got hit by a car.” Jessica added on, “Wow, that’s really sad. She’s been a huge help. Very sad that she tried saving a dead animal.”

In the Central Valley, there have been new discoveries in the huge case of two "Speed Freak" Killers. These two guys went out to kill people while they were high on crystal meth. One of the killers named Wesley Shermantine sent a letter to CBS in Sacramento. He talked about his fellow friend and killer Loren Herozog, current events, the victims, and the way his sister feels. He stated information about where some of the bodies of his victims are in return for thirty-three thousand dollars. After a few days, more than one thousand bone fragments were found near the farming town of Linden, about 80 miles east of San Francisco. Officials believe that both of them are responsible for many more deaths.
Shermantine, one of the so called “Speed Freak Killers,” is on death row in San Quentin for killing numerous people from 1984 to 1989. Herzog committed suicide last month after being told Shermantine was cooperating with authorities . Therefore, Shermantine is the only one who knows where the bodies are buried. Since they haven’t paid him any money, he won’t say where Loren Herozog hid the rest of the bodies.
